metal halide accident...

Hey guys,
Yesterday I got my new dual 250 watt metal halide ballast in the mail. I don't have my new tank yet (comes in Friday) so I decided to try and fire my new bulbs just to see what they looked like since I already got my reeflux 12K bulbs and sockets in the mail. I screwed the bulb in the socket, connected the socket to the ballast and plugged it in. Just great, the bulbs wouldn't fire. I thought it would be a good idea to wiggle the bulb to see if I had it connected properly. I made sure I only touched the bottom of the bulb since I knew it was bad to touch the glass with your bare hands. My hand slipped down the glass a bit and I touched the metal part of the bulb...instant electrocution! My muscles in my arms tensed from the electrocution so I couldn't let go of the bulb. So here I was grabbing the bulb rolling around involuntarily as I was being electrocuted for about 30 seconds. I couldn't scream for help or get it off me because the electricity took over. The best way I could describe it is being paralyzed and in extreme pain. I was just thinking, "GET IT OFF!" Once it finally got off I started screaming and my family called 911. The ambulance came and rushed me to UC Davis ICU. I noticed on my thumb that my thumb print was melted off because my skin melted between the bottom of the bulb and the mogul socket. I also have burn rashes all over my body, open wounds from thrashing around on the floor, and my arms were numb. The doctors said I had a seizure! They had me stay the night because I had some muscle deterioration and they wanted to monitor my heart. I had to be connected to a full IV and everything. Also there were about 20 UCD students watching me asking a bunch of questions :eek2: . I guess I'm felling OK now, just the burns feel funny. Use a GFCI!

Now the good part...the pics!

holy cow dude, That's a scary story. I do uses GFI's and that make me really glad. Good thing you did not have your tank set up, you could have fallen in it.... I'm actually thinking of also getting rubber mats for my tank room.

Jordon,

Glad to hear you are on the mend...

Perhaps you should share your story at the meeting on Friday with Steve (funman1). I know he is going to be talking about the need for a GFCI.

Take care dude,

John

Holy $hit!! You could have freakin died Jordan... this is freaky stuff.

I am so glad you are alright. It does bring to bear a greater appreciation for massive amounts of power we play with, surrounded by saltwater even. Thank you for sharing... wow.

Actually - you can only be electrocuted once. By definition it's 100% fatal. ;)

Glad you're okay - that's some scary stuff.

oh man.... scary! i'm glad you're ok! your thumb gives me the heebie-jeebies, but it's gonna be a cool scar. ;) i think this means you are officially a dedicated reefer... how many of us can say this hobby has sent us to the hospital? in all seriousness though, good to hear you are ok!

First off - I am glad that you are alright, and that nothing more serious happened. You were VERY lucky!

Now here's the cynical side of me: WT* were you thinking of?!?! Grabbing where there are expose metal to high currents and not having a GFCI. If I were you parents, I would give you a big hug, and then slap you silly for applying for the Darwin award.

wow! that is downright frightening jordan. i'm glad you're ok and hope you get well soon. that accident coulda been a LOT worse :(

take care.

I am glad to here that you are ok... Are you going to send them back and go with the HQI?

Glad you are alright.......and remember, chicks dig scars!!!!!

So.......when you completed the circuit and all the electricity was flowing through you to the ground.........did the bulb light up?

How did it look? Too blue.....too yellow?

I'm glad that you are doing better. It could have been worse if your hand was wet or you were otherwise in a worse predicament with water. Here's to you for getting better quickly!
