Millepora Polyp Extension

Hey everyone, its been awhile since I have posted anything on reef central. There has been this issue regarding polyp extension and the shaggy look of millepora's.

Every single mille ive taken home from the LFS went from complete cousin It shaggy to just normal polyp extension where you see the skeleton. All frags came from big mother colonies.

Any ideas?

Param:
Nitrate: <2ppm
phosphate: 0.02 (hanna)
Alk: 2.5meq/L
Cal: 400ppm
Mag: 1325ppm

Im not sure if I get your post correctly ...

it was hairy and healthy, and lost its PE so much u can see its skeleton ?

how is the flow? have u checked for pests ?

I meant to say...whenever I bring home a mille from my lfs, the polyp extension is never like when I bought it. At the LFS they were so shaggy you could hardly see the color of the base. Instead, in my tank, the polyp extension is still there just not as shaggy. If anything it doesnt even look like a millepora anymore.

Also, they came from a huge colony. I got a little frag from it. Maybe thats the problem? I also realized that they dont really develop any coralites like the mother colony has...very strange.

check water movement, millies love random and strong water movements

and if that didnt help, then check water parameters [below what we can test for] millies show they are not happy when they retract their polyps.

good luck :) hope he recovers for you soon

do they all? i have a bunch on milli together and some have pe up to .5" and other just have a stub...could this be a genetics thing in my case?

not trying to take the theard over so im sorry if it sounds like that

to be honest, all my millies show good PE and look hairy, so I would guess so, but not 100% sure, maybe someone with a not so hairy Milie can chim in. :)

also do check for pests ! AEFW are a killer ...

what kinda power heads are you using and what kinda lights? have you tryed to move it? have any of your levels change. have you asked the lfs if what they are dosing and what levels they are working with?

I got vortechs in my aquarium plus main pump. Yeah the polyp extensions are just normal. Not extra ordinary the way i saw it at the lfs...or shall i say shaggy

Yeah he fragged it right then and there. This was a year ago....from then the frag has healed, encrusted...etc

If it is encrusting, and growing, I would not worry about its health. I would ask the lfs what the are doing to maintain there tanks ( you should have that kind if relationship with them). What are you feeding, there feeding, and times. Could just be lighting, and it flow. I find in most cases, it is just down to basic husbandry. The smallest change can make profound impacts on certain species.

last thing I can think of after water, flow, lighting and the frag healing would be to dose some AA. in my tank which runs with low nutrition, when I loose PE, AA brings it right back ... but thats just my case. it might be different.

I had the same issue with my milli before.

since I replaced my tunze with koralias, I got better PE. I also say its the flow. I don't dose anything other than 2 part.

i agree, i donate some of my time to a shop close to the college i go to, and the first thing i did was put every thing i dose the tanks with right out in the open...

Ok what ill do is ill take a picture of both my milles tnr and post them here. The pick above that how my mille looked at the lfs. I dont have any of those white extensions coming out of mine. All i have is the little flowers. Ill show you guys picks tmr. Right now my lights are out.
