MJ stream mod

I was in the process of pricing out a tunze set up and came across this thread. I tried the mod, which does take some tinkering (but I am not skilled at all in this DIY stuff), but basically converts a maxijet into a tunze stream configuration. It is very impressive to the extent that I'm holding off on the $884 dual 6100's w/ controller. My prototype should be ready to go into the display tank tonight, picks are in my gallery. Check it out the thread here:

Thanks for the link. I've seen many MJ mods but I'm not sure I recall this one.

Where did you find the Black PVC....Or is that just a sharpie or paint. Also did you knotch the pipe or did you use a test cap.

It worked well in my display, but I'll need to find a better means of mounting it. Since I do not have a tunze, I can't directly compare, but the results are very good.

Its not painted. I used a pump guard that I had lying around, bought at a chain store. I'll find a link to it.

That does look like a really good mod. Can you post some pictures or even better a video? How do you stop the maxijet from turning on and going the wrong direction?

nwrogers, Take a look at the thread it shows that they use a piece of acrylic on the center brace. What happens is that if it turns on the wrong way the propellers push up in the housing until they hit the stopper. Once they enconter resistance the propeller will spin the other direction. Its very reliable as people are using these thing on wave makers. I don't know if I would go as far to use a wavemaker though. If that stop block fails then you have a in tank cuisnart. As for the video I know there is something posted in one of those threads I have watched it before.

I am glad that people in the URS are starting to builf these. I put one together and it works pretty well. I was going to build a few more and get rid of my plain maxi-jets. You can also build these with Maxi1200s but I guess their output to power consumption ratio is not as good with the 900s

Having done this exactly once, I'm no expert on this, but I can add to this. The original link is pretty descriptive albeit long.

Exactly right. If takes a fraction of a second to correct itself so you barely notice it.

Works fine on my tsunami so far.

True, but if you but if you have a larger tank and/or want more flow, then you need larger prop which should be driven by a 1200.

If that stop block fails then you have a in tank cuisnart.

If the stopper fails (i.e. breaks off, etc) the pump runs in reverse but the suction is not as great as you'd think. I do not think there is much, if any, risk to your livestock in that event. You would risk some splashing if you pump was very near (an inch or two) the surface.

Thats true but for some reason the thought of the thing becoming a food processor makes me LOL...I don't know why. I certainly dont want any fish to get cut up....Just the idea of it I guess. I can't help but mention it everytime someone talks about the majistreams
