mnml's rimless

LED update:

It's been 1 week since I've switched to LED. So far the light is performing great and I love how programmable this fixture is. One thing I have noticed is some signs of bleaching on the tips of some of the SPS. These lights are powerful! It's mostly the ones under the 40 degree optics so I've throttled back the intensity a bit until I can switch them out for the 70 degree optics. Everything else seem to be responding well.

I had the same problem with LED's. I have a custom modded ATI Sunpower with 5x24watt T5 (120watts total T5) + 24xCree LED's (about 60watts total LED). Was too intense! :smokin:

With a mixture of 40+60 degree lens my SPS bleached bright white.

I now have a mixture of 60+80 degree lens and things are better. My SPS are colouring up so well with the LED+T5! :)

Heres my build thread showing my LED/T5 ATI unit:

Incidently, you had a powermodule, which is one of the best lighting units out there for coral colour and growth, why did you swap to LED's?

It's pleasing to know that I'm not the only one. Right now I have the lights at max 35% for 3 hours/day. I hope to be able to bring up the intensity to about 60% with the 70* optics.

The PM is a great fixture but I made the switch because I wanted something dimmable and has shimmer.

Here are some pics of the LEDs with just the Royal Blues on. It's crazy how much it makes the corals pop.

I also picked up these 2 pieces this weekend.

Gold Torch - I really like how this looks, it's still acclimating so the tentacles aren't fully extended.

wow, those royal blues makes those corals pop! looks great Tran. Maybe I'll go LED sooner or later, most likely later LOL

@mike & rick

Thanks a bunch. I'm really happy with these lights so far. Hopefully the corals will too! :)

I PM'ed you but I will just ask here as well in case someone else has the same question.

What Sol AI's did you get? As in the dimensions. The 12" 24" 48" or whichever they offer?who did you buy them from?

Your tank is beautiful. Oh and nice kid.
(LoL)
;)

Whats up Ryan, Thanks for the nice compliment. Im pretty stoked on the AIs. They come in 12" modules and I got 3 of the Sol Blue. AI recommends 1 per foot but I think 3 is perfect for my tank. I'm going to get the 70 degree optics to lessen the intensity once they are made available. Right now I can't run the lights at more than 40%. I got mine from SoCal Tropical Fish here in SoCal.

Hey Tran, the tank is looking real nice, I was planning on doing the same size tank and yours have given me alot of ideas in my head. Are you happy with the quality of the LeeMar tank?

Hi Binh

The build quality in the LeeMar are quite nice. I would definitely recommend them.

Thanks!

Hey Tran, I really like your tank and I'm in the process of upgrading my setup. I am seriously considering going rimless for this build. I'm keeping it to a 48x24x24 or 48x30x24 LeeMar tank. At this point the only thing I am sure of is that I am going to use the "Herbie" method with a 3/4" return and one 1" drain with a 1" emergency drain.

There is no doubt that the rimless builds are clean and sexy. If you could snap your fingers and add Euro-bracing to your tank would you do it? Like you I will be using Vortech's. Any splashing/spillage with your setup?

The rimless tanks look like they are easy to clean and just beautiful tanks in my opinion. Given the fact we live in earthquake country I'm considering Euro-bracing for safety concerns. Even though I think if we were to see a quake strong enough to take your tank down it is not going to make a difference.

Hi Rotknee, thanks for kind words. I really like the rimless look and would do it all over again if I had chance. With that said, there would be some things I would change.

1. Plumbing: Right now I have a Durso style drain which is nice and simple. However, I would prefer the Herbie or the BeanAnimal style drain for safety. My friend Robojet has the BeanAnimal drain on her setup and it's 100% silent and fail safe. I really dig it! So if you're planning to pull the trigger, definitely go with your plan on using her Herbie.

2. Euro-Bracing: I'm on the fence on this. While it would help strengthen the tank and help splashing, I think it would make it hard to clean the glass. I use a Hammerhead magnet and I think it would be hard to clean the top of the glass where the water line is. I remember last July when we had that small earthquake. I lost about 3 gallons of water but luckily my tank didn't budge at all. I do think if it was Euro-braced it would of help keep some of the water in. :hmm5:

3. Size: I really like having the 30" wide tank. It allows more for creative aquascaping and gives nice depth perception. I do have a little bit of a problem placing corals in the back since my arms aren't that long. :o I usually have to use a pair of long tongs to place the frag, which can be a pain sometimes.

LeeMar is a great choice. Vortechs are nice, but I would also consider the Tunze streams. They're produce less noise and require less maintenance.

Good luck with your new build. Please do post a thread once you get things going, would love to check it out

LED update:

I've been away for the past 2 weeks on business. Came back to my tank and I've noticed some noticeable changes. Luckily no bleaching on any of the corals but the ones on the outter edge of the tank lost some color. I expected this since the intensity were still set quite low for acclimation. The corals in the middle of the tank looks great. Nice color and some growth were noticed.

I also received my 70 degree optics from AquaIllumination. :) :) I had a chance to install them this morning and so far they look great. The light looks evenly spread now. I will take some pics tonight when the lights are at its peak. I've also ramped up the intensity by 5%.

Currently light settings are:

Timer1: 8:00am duration 240mins white 25% blue 25% royal blue 30% lunar off
Timer2: 2:00pm duration 240mins white 50% blue 50% royal blue 55% lunar off
Timer3: 8:00pm duration 60mins white 25% blue 25% royal blue 30% lunar off
Timer4: 9:00pm duration 30mins white 0% blue 10% royal blue 10% lunar off
Timer5: 9:30pm duration 30mins white 0% blue 0% royal blue 0% lunar on

Corals seem to like the new lights so I decided to pick up a few new pieces at the Coral Farmers Market this weekend.

My Orange Crush has doubled in size in the last 2 months, it must be pellets I'm feeding :D

My friend Austin (90shooter) was kind of enough to give me my first chalice. It's starting to color up nicely under the LEDs
