mnml's rimless

No problem, just keep the shutter speed above 60 and you should be ok with shooting handheld. I am too lazy myself to set up a tripod myself.

You have a VERY nice camera and lens, If you are just getting started look into how fstop effects depth of field and bokeh with the lens you have. After your comfortable with it try finding what color temp looks best rather than using auto white balance (8300k for me).
Another good thing to know is how shutter speed works and ISO (and the noise increase cause by increased ISO).

Hi Eric,

Nothing new with the tank. It's pretty much on cruise control. I've been keeping busy learning how to use my new camera. :)

Tank is looking good Tran. Looks like the gold torch is recovering nicely. Nice pick up on the camera, I got a D90 and man does it take some time to learn how to take a pic of the tank properly. But I think I'm getting the hang of it. A nice tripod will do wonders making the pics crisp and clear. Try turning off all pumps when you take pics, they should come out more crisp when you do.

Sorry about the rock rubble brother, been busy with work and haven't headed out that way.

WOW- what is this thingy:

Hey Mike,
Things are going well so I'm afraid to do anything to the tank. :lolspin: I'm holding out until Reef-a-palooza to get any items. Thanks for the tip on the camera tricks, I will give it a try.

No worries on the rubble, I don't plan to add anything for awhile so we can meet up some other time.

Hi Ninja1, It's a toadstool leather coral. Glad you like it :)

Thanks RaeRae. Best Buy had a sale for $1799 which included a 28-135mm lens. I ended up selling that lens and getting a EF 35mm f/1.4. I think the lens makes a huge difference since these pics are much better than the 28-135mm.

I love the 35mm L. Though for taking pictures of the tank, I think a macro lens will do a much better job. IMO, the 35L is more suited for portraits and low light photography. One downsize of the 35mm L, which you may not even noticed when shooting the tank is purple fringing.

I absolutely love this tank. I am seriously hoping for this exact set up, but I am still pondering how I want it to face the wall. I think that being able to have it extend out into the room will look awesome (rather than against the wall) and can make for some cool aquascaping... but I am not sure how that will look with the lights and other equipment showing. In your opinion, do you prefer it against the wall, or would having it face the room like this ---| be another good option? (i just don't see it done like that often, so I am wondering if there is a reason for that?)

Also, I noticed you don't have a mesh cover or glass top for the tank? Have you had any jumpers? Any concerns there?

Keep up the incredible work and thanks for the inspiration!

hi sawcreatives,

thanks for the nice feedback. i've actually sold my entire setup to a local reefer and have taken a break from the hobby. i think your idea of making the tank into a room divider is great if your floorplan allows it. you can always get creative with the light fixture to make aesthetically pleasing to the eye. the overflow would probably have to be a peninsula style or external to make it look right.

i didn't have a cover at first and lost a lot of fish due to carpet surfing. i ended up getting a mesh top for my tank but i usually take it off when i have visitors or taking pictures. you can get the netting material from bulk reef supply.

hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey Mike - good to hear from you. I haven't gotten my tank online yet. We just moved into a new house and spending most of my $$ on remodeling projects. I am, however, planning on getting a new system up next year..already planning the plumbing for it. Keep in touch!
