Update: things are going good except for the cyano, I have had it for about a week now. Tried moving my pumps but it is still around :( Scutero is doing great, nice and fat.

Just noticed today that as i was getting ready to do my water change there is also cyano in my sump. was no there 2 days ago when i topped off. had a small pump sitting around i used to mix my water so i put in the refugium part hope it helps.

Update: 12/14/2012

Lost my red scooter last week, died R.I.P. Scutero.

Today got a new inhabitant for my 40B, made him a little house out of 1" PVC.

Guess what kind of fish it is :)

And now for pics.

My new jawfish has jumped twice already, once 2 days ago and once yesterday. 2 days ago when I first got him, I put a temporary eggcrate cover not thinking the fish would fit through. I hear a thump on the ground and there it was. So I put my lights sitting on my tank, fish jumped again, hit the canopy and then went back in. Today, I modified my cover by cutting a "frame" out of the eggcrate then covering it with a piece of window screen sheet. Hope it works.

BTW fish is a pearly jawfish since no one was guessing other than Mike Amayeu

Taking out my chaetomorpha soon anyone in need? Willing to trade for fishy stuff. Ball is about the size of a cantaloupe. In its place will go an algae turf scrubber just built 2 days ago but waiting to put in place until after I remove the chaetomorpha.

Maybe you should start the ATS to get it up and running first. It'll take weeks before it's mature enough to perform good nitrate reduction. (So I've read).

Otherwise, you may get a nitrate spike once you remove your chaeto and you'll have to compensate with more frequent water changes or additional skimming or less feeding.

You do want to get the ats started first or you are asking for it Luis. At least have the algae forming on the screening first.

Good idea thanks guys, I could save a small amount if it don't forget I also have my mangrove farm :) I wonder if the ATS will affect them?

Sorry Ron i have been busy and also its been raining and i have it outside with some vinegar to wash out the pvc since some i used was old.

Here ya go Ron, I made the base with 1/2" PVC then put a 1"-1/2" reducing coupling unglued for easy removal when I'm cleaning it. Unfortunately the pump I have is not strong enough so ill need to wait to buy a new one.

Cool!

So this will sit in your sump? Or it is your sump? You are only lighting it from one side or two sides?

And yes, definitely get the ATS running/seeded with algae before taking out your chaeto.
