Ok, I am set on buying an MRC skimmer.
I have about 27" of clearance inside the stand to fit the skimmer in. The sump will have about 8" of water inside the chamber accepting the flow from the skimmer.

How high is the exit bulkhead from the ground, am I going to run in to too much back-pressure?

If I were to get the MR-1 I could elevate it a few inches to help but the MR-2 would have to sit near the bottom to allow access to cleaning. I am only running a 50 show with about 60-65 gallons total in the system and I really dont plan on upgrading... I know, I know... but not until I get my own house and then I don't think a shiney new tank will be high up on the priority list.
So... all you that have smaller tanks would you opt for the larger skimmer?

A side question I have, im assuming running calc. effluent will not have the same effect on the quick fitting as the o3? Correct me if I am wrong.
 
Everyone here obviously has a MRC of some sort.

I'm in the process of looking for a new skimmer and am up in the air between a few different models with MRC being my favorite.

My question for you guys is this, if you could change anything about your MRC skimmer what would it be?

How loud is the skimmer? This MR- 2 will be in a stand under 92 gallon tank in our living room.

The skimmer itself isn't too loud, but I find the Gen X 55HP fairly loud, I have it in my living room in a small appartment, it is the loudest part of my tank (the fan on the pump is annoying), not too bad.. just a little irrtating

I have a similar setup except my tank is 110. you don't have to worry about back pressure with the skimmer at all -- Mine is completely submerged and it runs great! I have the MR-2

I know I have a ton of stuff packed in under here but I think you can see the skimmer behind the lifeguard gear. As you can see I have the water level just above the black box == about 2 in. up the first riser. Hope this helps
 
Things I don't like about the mr-2 skimmer.
1) the gate valve is not removable from the base just incase you ever change your setup. so be careful when gluing pvc to it
2) the cup is to small between the walls for you to get your
fingers in to clean it out.
with the silencers on you will not be able to hear it

Little update. The skimmer finally seems to be doing it's thing :D At least I think it is. Since I just have LR and LS, there is little in the way of dirt. But it is pulling some sludge!

On Tuesday, I am getting the newer injector. My old injector has a 3/4" input with 3/4 hose and was the pull apart.

1. Is the new injector 1" input? Looks to be bigger than the old one.

2. I would assume that since more water will be injected into the skimmer, there will be some performance increase?

My MR-3 arrived a few weeks ago, and I just got it plumbed in the other day. The injectors on mine are 1", one came slip, the other threaded. I do not know why, I would've preferred them both to be slip, but wth.

The flow from the pump will be increasing. Can't be a bad thing??

Hi,

the MR2 is a best buy and will work in your situation, pointers

beckett work best with a pressure rate pump

With skimmer size and tank size, is better to have a skimmer to do the job well, then the other way around

the only down fall I have seem, the skimmer keeps the tank too clean and some corals don't like that, but that's easy to fix, just increase feeding a bit,

also bigger skimmer give you more flexibility on the fish you can keep

last question, do you mean the calcium reactor effluent being injected inside the skimmer,

first of all, no it won't degrade the o-ring or any parts like ozone, there are few things that have the degrading effect of ozone, even ozone safe tubing must be change once in a while

what's the purpose?

it doesn't help with co2 reduction, if thats what you are after...

since the effluent is rich in calcium, and the pump is hot, it will build up quickly, degrading the life of the pump if is not clean very very often

I would skip that,

about skimmer, try to see if it you can accommodate it, properly, but in general based on its space and restriction, a needle wheel design is more suited if space is an issue, smaller tanks, but if the space is there than the performance of becketts are hard to beat, good luck,

thanks, that was the info i was looking for

i will get the mr-2, thanks for filling me in on misinformation about the co2, i dont know where i picked that up...

if back presure isnt a problem i will get the mr-2. is the pcx55 going to be the cheapest pump i can get to run the thing efficiently or could i use the pcx40 or pcx30 because of the small tank size, i know tank size doesnt really have to do with how the skimmer operates but i didnt know if those 2 were pressure pumps or not

i know most of the power of the beckett comes from pressure... in the past i had a barr aquatic beckett skimmer that was sweet but too large for our current application and we ended up selling it off in a feeble attempt to get out of the hobby
 
ask Andy what he would suggest -- I have a Blue Line -- seems to work without any problems -- I had to clean it out today because it started making noise -- once it was cleaned and put back together -- no more noise and excellent performance.

I have a Blueline HD70 driving my MR3, per Andy's recommendation. It seems to drive the skimmer very well, although to this point I have only done a fresh water test, which it turns out was pointless.

Victor90 i use an old tooth brush to clean the cup it works great.
 
I run an iwaki 70 on my mr2, But i have the 8 inch extension. Dunno what it would be like without it. I get great skimmate though.
