Cap off the rec holes and run a DC10000 on it.
Dual beckett will only pull 60 or so watts with the pump
and works great.
MRC is just wrong in there design along with alot of other
beckett manufacturers.
Look at a BARR and you will see a perfect large beckett
design.... I like any large ETSS modded to a beckett
as a close 2nd to a large old barr.
Bad basic design flaws in alot of BECKETTS give them
a poor rep.
When you raise the tower an lower the water level becketts
excell like no other skimmer.
This isn't the first time I've heard that it should not be run as a recirc. So are you saying that the Becketts should be raised higher and it should not be run as a recirc? If you have any pics that would be great.
are you referring to the MR-2R if so, can you explain about cap off the rec holes. i run this skimmer and wish it made smaller bubbles, i think it would do a better job if it did
I am in the same boat here since I have an MR-2R. I'd love to be able to dial this in before I ditch it. It works ok but for the energy consumption that it requires with an Iwaki 70 it needs to work great. My skimmer is stock and I've also heard that raising the becketts is a good thing. Why is this not done when they make these things? Pictures would certainly help and or any additional info regarding eliminating the recirc.
are you running the iwaki70 right now. i have the bl-55 on mine. i have access to a bl70 and thought about trying that to see if i could generate smaller bubbles. its working pretty good right now but would like to see more of a foam than the larger bubbles.
The 70 will definitely make a difference in a stock setup. I tried a 55 before and it was too weak to help out. There are definitely smaller bubbles within the neck. Once the bubbles get closer to the top they are a little larger but don't produce a great foam. It's ok but it feels like you have to run the skimmer pretty wet in order to skim gunk out. I recently opened my air valves all the way and do not use a silencer. It seems to have helped.
Before I'd take a look a the skimmer day after day and listen to that energy hogging pump while I had very little skimate to show for. Thus the reason for the few changes and I'm getting better results but it should work better IMO.
ill give the 70 a go. ive never gotten a really dark skimmate with mine. its always a light brown but pulls a lot out. i know a lot of the needle wheel skimmers pull that really black gunk out. guess its all the same, just uses more salt water to do it. i took the silencer off when i got it and it is def a better way to run it. my air valves are halfway open and my water line is about an inch above the blue box with recirc pump on and air off. seems to be the sweet spot. this is about the best bubble size mine makes. wish it was smaller though. are yours smaller with the bigger pump?
I think my riser is taller than yours and I have all small bubbles until it gets closer to the top and they get a little larger like yours. I want the black gunk. It seems like the only time when you get the dark stuff is when you clean the riser/neck and you fill you waste container afterwards. Most of the time the skimate is tea colored but not clear.
I would definitely experiment with the 70. It can only help but it will require more energy.
u must have the 3R which recommends the70 but i will def try it. ive never had the black tar and my skimate has always had that tea color. i will have to say that this skimmer is ultra sensitive to foods or hands in the water. everything i do shuts down the foam. especially if i change my filter socks or clean it. i stopped cleaning it so much so it would keep skimming. i bought this with orca pro 1 sitting right beside it and wish i would have coughed up the extra $. more of a set it and forget it.
