Well, this thread wen't dormant FAST!! I'm going to try the Mag12 as a recirc pump and see how that does. If that doesn't cut it I'm going to try the BL55.

I'd still like to know if raising the beckets 12" will be effective. Anyone?

Are you running a MR-2R right now?

I have one that I'm currently plumbing in. After all that was said about recirc pumps and raising the becketts, I wanted to make sure I did everything before I hooked it up so I wouldn't have to take it apart again.

In my experience even a 1 foot raise in the beckett tower
is worth it.
On your skimmer this should put the becketts above the water
level which is the flaw that most becketts have.
Stay tuned for a build plus video of the only monster beckett
value put into my skimmer driven by a dc10000.

i am running the MR-2R. I was running a BL-55 on it for several months. Was never happy with it. It skimmed ok, but if i fed the fish, changed filter socks, it would take a day minimum for it to build up another head of foam. It would just run flat forever. The bubbles were just to big to do anything. I had access to a BL-70 so i put that on there to see if it would help. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It made the same kind of bubbles that you see the NW skimmers making. It never came close to that with the 55 on it. Problem was that the pump surged because i couldnt run the water level high enough. It would overflow instantly. Got the 12" extension, raised the becketts 8" and this thing is a monster. This is the way it should run IMO. 30 minutes after feeding and its back to skimming. The pictures were taken right after i hooked it up so no nastiness in the cup yet.

That's great to see that the mod worked. The BL-70 makes a huge difference for supplying enough water pressure to the 2 becketts. I started talking to the MRC people and finally dialed in my MR-3R skimmer to a satisfactory level. They didn't think that raising the becketts would help since the stock design was not made that way. I still may take the initiative and raise them to test it out.

That's what I'm wondering......if raising the becketts will decrease the back pressure and allow the BL-55 to work better, a more powerful pump may not be necessary.

Yep. after getting the info from you, i figured it had to be better than the way it was. Glad i listened to ya.

Glad I could help. Now maybe I should listen to your proven story with the raised becketts. Your bubble column is now taller than mine. You were right though I had a MR-3R to begin with.

I doubt raising the becketts will allow for you to run a 55 on a dual beckett. The 70 produces a way better chopped up bubble.

Ok, I'm calling bullshit!! You don't need to raise your becketts. After running the skimmer with the becketts raised and then in the stock configuration, I've found it actually works better in the stock configuration. Don't waste your money or your time to raise them.

True. I'm not sure I understand HOW raising the becketts can improve the foam production.

From what I've read, there's a lot of comparing downdraft skimmer to Beckett skimmer. They operate entirely differently.

Help!
So I have a m r 2 r that I don't run as a recirc. It has been working fine and then today while I was standing in the fish room I saw the water plummet down into the blue box and look like boiling water...I figured a cerith had wandered into one of the injectors so turned it off and cleaned them out..nothing was in either. I turned it on again and still same. So I unplugged the pump and replaced it with another same but BNIB and tried again. Not the pump. WTH could it be?? Can an injector just suddenly fail? Is there something else I am not thinking of??

Explain it to me like I am a four year old...a lot of this stuff goes over my head :)

Hello everyone

Two questions

First. I have had my mrc mr2 for 6 plus years love it, what is a good pump to use that uses less electricity then my blue line ?
Second. Where can I get a new becket and new needle valve to adjust the air?

Many thanks
Michael

for pumps I couldn't really say but you can try out the reeflo tridant pumps. otherwise it is hard to find a good low wattage pressure rated pump.

for the beckett parts, call up championlighting or Aquarium Specialty, they should be able to get the parts if they don't have them on hand. I thought I got my beckett from premium aquatics before but looks like they stopped selling them.
