Ms. Peacock

We had another successful molt yesterday. Looks like everything came out great. I was able to rescue the intact telson and uropods again. The gentleman who will be adopting her was hoping to get a set and was really stoked to hear that I got them for him.

Some close-up pictures taken of a discarded dactyl molt taken with my phone and a jewler's loupe:

You can see the wear on the striking surface.

Notice the stress fracture in the upper part of the dactyl:

Last night, our beautiful and enchanting mantis shrimp, Betty, went to her new home. She waited patiently in her bucket of water while we emptied the tank to movie it. She sat is Pamela's hand for a very long time while we were loading all of the gear into the cars. It was a very sweet and touching goodbye. The tank move went well and we had Betty and Barney set back up in their tank by the end of the evening. We're going to miss her very much.

That basically brings this thread to it's conclusion.

But fear not, this is not the end. When we get settled down in Hawaii, I will be looking for an O. brevirostris and a P. ciliata.

Cheers!

Hey gang,

The move to Hawaii has been a pretty epic one. If you're interested in some updates on what we've been up to, check out my thread on Nano-Reef. I haven't had time to get any of my tanks up and running since we've moved here, but I'm hoping to in the next 6 months or so. Hawaii has been many big challenges for us, but we're overcoming them one by one and starting to get settled in.

So, while I'm in a deficit of mantis shrimp in my life at the moment, at least I can keep the spirit alive with a personalized plate on my car... As some of you may already know, 'alo'alo is the Hawaiian word for mantis shrimp!

Anyhow, I'm still around and hoping to get back into the mantis shrimp world sooner than later.

In the meantime, here's a badass invertebrate that lives in my front yard! It's the best I can do for now.

Also, if you were wondering, Betty is still doing very well in her new home and is just as interactive, friendly and hand-tamed as always. I'm glad I found her such a good home.

I read through the entire thread a few weeks ago and I was hoping that she faired well in her new home. Glad to hear that she has!

Brief update. Betty is still doing well in her new home from what I've heard. And my Hawaiian adventure is still going strong! I'm still mantis-less, but I'm getting closer to having time to get one of my tanks up and running. I'll start by sumping one of my 2 gallon fluval specs and go from there. My ultimate goal is to get an O. brevirostris mantis into my 25 gallon or set up a new 30 or 40 gallon tank. The aquarium hobby is more or less non-existent here, but I do have at least one friend with a reef tank. Tanks are very expensive here. I assume because many are damaged during shipping. As far as local fish stores, we have one Petco and one Mom and Pop store that has slim pickin's.

You can follow along with my Hawaiian adventure here: http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/351093-islandoftikis-hawaiian-adventure/

Dude I read through some of this thread (again) and I just have to say that Betty is a freaking awesome mantis. I hope mine will become half that awesome. Even among Peacocks she seems to be pretty special.

Whenever I speak with people regarding the activity of stomatopods and whether or not they kill everything in sight, I redirect to this thread as it's a perfect example of how variable their personallities can very and that they're not just some blood thirsty race dwelling in the ocean.

It's stories like these that dug their poor reputation as hitchhikers into the grave.

Yeah I think anyone would enjoy having a mantis shrimp if they'd just give them a second look. I see how excited some reefers get about certain species of fish or corals and I always think how amazed they would be if they ever owned a colorful Peacock with a great personality.
