MSX skimmer club

The soda fizz is from all the new stuff in the new system. New tank, sump, plumbing, pumps, all that stuff can kill foam. As above, give it time.

Ok, 3 months is a looooong time. It should have been past the soda fizz a long time ago. Without rereading all the posts, this tank has what for bioload?

2 fully grown false percs and a ornate leopard wrasse. Roughly 200# of LR, 180g display, 75g sump.

Are you or someone else in your house a smoker? Is there ever anyone around the skimmer that smokes? Are you running carbon?

No smoke within 200 feet of my house...or I come out shooting.

No carbon is being run.

I generally feed 5-10mL of homemade food once a week.

Great... I had similar issues and the only things I could think of was my wife's habit in the garage (no smoking in the house) and I noted that production seemed to drop when using GAC.

I smoke in the garage and use GAC in a media reactor and still my SWC300 is churning away, producing a pretty disgusting skimmate. Good to know that those could affect the performance though...

What about dosing.... do you dose anything close to the skimmer intake?

I don't dose anything in this tank. I was going to start this month with calcium, but want to get this skimmer issue worked out first.

Hope someone here can steer me in the right direction. Currently have a 90 display, right now mostly softies and LPS, but the intent is to be predominately SPS down the road. 70 gallon sump, 30 gallon fuge, 200# of live rock. I'm going to turn my current fuge into a growout tank, add another 20 gallon fuge, and a 30 gallon cryptic zone.Maybe tie another 30 gallon container onto the system to facilitate water changes, and also add another 40 gallon tank.
I currently have an ASM G3 with the recirc mod. The best I can seem to get out of it is a cup or so of light pea green skimmate daily.
I've been looking at the MSX 300 or 300A, and the MSX 1A cone.
Opinions on which would be best? Or are all three of these overkill for my system, should I be looking at a smaller model?

i think you could get away with the MX1A cone or just go with a MSX250. I have my 250 with stock PW's on a 220 DT, 75 sump and 75RR refuge, with plenty of tangs and still could add to the bioload

I'd go with a 250a.....get an askoll. You'll never need another skimmer again.

Would you recommend the neck extension? And do you know why the 300A is only twenty bucks more, with a 12 inch diameter, while the 250 has a ten inch? Does the 250 perform better?

the 300a would be able to handle a large bioload. you would be ok getting it but it may have spurts pulling out the gunk unless you load your tank up. the 300 will give you better contact time especially with the askoll. my skimmer did the same thing till i upped my bioload now skims pretty consistent

When you are discussing the 250A and 300A, it is getting tricky. There is the "old" 250/300A which are the standard MSX250/300s with the Sicce pumps removed and an Askoll pump retrofitted. There is also the "new" 250/300A with comes with the Askoll stock and has a different body design.

I have no clue which year either one is, going off what they have available on their website.

What is on the website currently is the old design. The new ones will be available soon.

Hi there sjm817. Is the new MSX design like the white SWC one? What's the difference in the body?

Is there going to be that big of a difference in performance between the two to make waiting for it to be released worth it? And I have never done business with MS, will they discount the older models when the new one is released?
