Multiple Tangs? Anyone?

who has multiple tang? what species can co-inhabitate?

we recently bought a Acanthurus pyroferus (maybe? might also be a lemon tang?)
anyway, it looked really bad, then got got popeye,

so we put a in order for a Ctenochaetus truncatus; expecting the other one to die (shipping cost being what they are we order fish all at once regardless)

naturally the lemon (or mimic?) tang decided to recover, now we are wondering if they can live in a 150G together (or a least until we can find a hoime for one) .....
or if the yellow one turn out to be a mimic, will they look to similar?
 
I have a powder blue and tomini that have been together since '06. I think you'll be fine.
 
I have a purple, yellow, sailfin, regal, orange shoulder, and a lieutenant in my 180 and they all get along fine. They all school around together.
 
Achilles, orange shoulder, 2 scopas, purple, chocolate, fowleri and maculiceps here. Some occasional fighting and slashing. But no constant harassing or cornering.
 
good thread. It could be really help some of us out even more if these responses included a few more details like the following:

- tank size and how this affects housing multiple tangs (some have provided and some have not)
- did you introduce all at once or not
- how long have you had them together
- what size are your tangs and do you think you will have issues as they get larger

I have a 150g going and would love to have more than 1 tang as I complete my fish list.I already know from the sticky on which ones to stay aware from based on tank size and aggression.

I have a yellow, powder blue and yellow kole eye in a 180g with no problems. I introduced the yellow first and then the kole eye and powder blue second. The yellow never really ventured to the other side of the tank and stays on one side. He seemed like a tough guy with the other fish, but when the powder blue and yellow kole eye were introduced he seemed really mellow. No aggression, but at night if someone tries to sleep by the yellow tang, he gets upset and won't tolerate it. Each have their own hiding spot and stick to it. In the morning all is well. I have 3 separate algae clips with different kinds of dried algae so they all get a variety and can graze as they like. Also when I introduced the two other tangs, I made sure that there was food available and fed all of the other fish. They saw it as, "woohoo the food god has given us food early and more of it". I've always offered food when introducing a new fish so they get accustomed to new arrivals as a possitive thing.
 
Yellow, chevron, purple, and mimic.

Yellow 2.5" first. Chevron 2.5" 2nd. Added 2" purple and it got harassed by yellow. Mimic 1.5" 4th.

Pulled yellow for 2 weeks and reintroduced in acclimation box for a day. Purple was showing aggression at first then aggression died off. Then let out yellow.

Now they live happy together in my 180. 6 months now.
 
Thanks everyone. These are good responses and will help when the time comes to add a couple of tangs. These will most likely be the last fish I add and I am just wary of upsetting the balance and harmony of a peaceful tank.

Interesting comment on having separate algae clips. For others with multiple tangs, do they share an algae clip or do you also use multiple clips?
 
They will share the clips, but I put different algaes in the separate clips so they have a choice of which algae to choose from since I don't know exactly what they ate in the wild. I feed green, red, purple and brown dried algaes from 3 different clips. I usually put the brown and purple on one clip. It's more or less just to give them a choice. They seem to favor the brown and purple the most.
 
I only have a 150G ... maybe enough for the tang police, but personally ;I dunno....

the Ctenochaetus truncatus is in the tank now ...thats one hyper/skittish fish I tell ya ...

I currently have a Desjaradini SF 4", a Tommi 2-1/2" and a orange shoulder juv 3" in my 125g added in the order mentioned. I have a 220g that will be up the end of this month and get my Achilles juv from LA today for the start of the 10wk QT process
 
I've had a Yellow and Hippo together in a 135 mixed reef. The Yellow was introduced first at about 2 inches. The Hippo was about an inch. Once the Hippo settled down and started venturing out and about, it was no problem. I think larger tanks, 240/300+, do help in the equation. With multiple Tangs, fighting and Ich are always concerns.
 
I have a sailfin, yellow and blue hippo together in a 125. They all get along fine with each other.

Sort of, I had two tanks up that I combined into one. One tank had the blue and yellow tang. The other had the purple and sailfin. When I set up the new tank they were all put in together. The orange shoulder and the lieutenant tank were added later. The only aggression issues I had was the orange shoulder on the lieutenant when I added him. Everything is calm now.
 
I currently have a 12" Vlamingi, an 11" naso, yellow tang, purple tang, hippo tang, orange shoulder, desjardi sailfin, Atlantic blue and a mimic tang in a 265 and have no aggression issues.

All except the mimic were added at the same time though when the tank was upgraded from a 125.
