this i pretty much what it looked like from the picture when i ordered it just more green.

Tank info:

it is in a 6g fluval edge that is plumbed to a 25g sump via a eshopps nano overflow. i have a 8 watt innovative marine led fixture over it

. i have a aqua c urchin skimmer in there along with a bag of chemi pure, bag of carbon, bag of gfo all of this is on top of live rock in the section where bio balls used to be so good flow over the media. i have a ATO setup from AutoTopoff.com. i even have a soccer size ball of chaeto in the sump. the tank is almost 2 yrs old nothing in there but some palys and a hairy mushroom one clownfish and 2 sexy shrimp. ( snails and hermits as well) my return pump provides most of the flow but i do have a nano powerhead in there that is only on during the day.

not sure if i tagged this right b/c i usually just read these threads and very seldom post anything.

tried to give all important info if i left anything out let me know.

i orginally positioned it right underneath the light to make sure it had enough exposure. i also have almost 5 inches of sand in that tank. i had a mj600 in there from before with the little plastic prefilter they come with. i had turned off the pump to let the anenome settle in. well it moved from where i had it the first night, but after a few days it stayed put. so i turned the powerhead back on. woke up in the middle of the night saw the anenome stuck to the plastic prefilter on the powerhead. :mad2: i got it free and didn't lose any tenticles if you can believe that. that is why i got the new powerhead by the way. well when that happened it moved again about 8" away from where it was.

the problem:

since the powerhead incident it has bleached quite a bit. i expected this b/c from what i have read most nems do this at first, but the mouth is open most of the time. now just past the mouth is closed so you can't see down the column or its throat. just the exterior mouth is open. it does eat very well tenticles are very sticky. once it has something the sexy shrimp can't take it away so i know its sticky. i does close its mouth right after a meal, and at night when the moon lights are on. i can see that its foot is stuck to the glass bottom b/c of the design of the tank you can see under the side its on. it hasn't lost anymore of its color in fact it seems to be regaining color or maybe its my imagination. it looks much better under the moon lights. i have had this nem going on 2 months now. the mouth situation has been going on for all but maybe 3 days of that time. it is fully open tenticles are all fat and long. other than the mouth and color it looks and acts healthy. i would like to point out it hasn't moved since the power head incident.

my question:
does it sound like it will be alright?
is there anything i should do?
what should i be looking out for?
i am feeding every 3 days. should i continue this?
does it sound doomed to die?

Making sure I am reading this right;
This is a 6 gallon tank with 8 watts of LED?

If that is correct, I see 2 issues, that is is way too small, and that light might not be enough.

the guy at marine depot said the light would be more than adequate. in fact the anenome moved to the far right of the tank to get out from right underneath the light. the guy from marine depot said i could grow anything i wanted under this light given the shallow nature of the tank's design. my total water volume is 29.5 gallons with the sump.

come on can't anybody offer any advice.

Total water volume doesn't matter. That anemone will get well over 15" across, and it simply is not appropriate for a 6 gallon tank.

Do you want real advice, or only the advice that you want to hear?

i understand what you are saying and i didn't mean for it to sound like i was dismissing what you said, but i was looking for a little more substance. it is only 3"inches across right now so the size of the tank shouldn't have any bearing correct or am i wrong. i can always transplant him to the 120 later or sell him to someone in my club. this is my wife's tank and she wanted a nem. i am trying to appease her. i am just trying to find out if the whole powerhead thing is gonna kill him or what. i have been reefing for 5yrs but this is the 1st nem i have tried so no real experience there. i hear when people say the mouth is gapping. does that mean your nem should be closed right at the top completely or atleast the throat closed.

look todd i appreciate you responding to my thread, b/c it seems like very few people ever do maybe that's why i don't post much. anyway, i was just looking for some answers to my questions.

thanks in advance for any help

Congrats on your first purchase but i would listen to Toddrtrex he is one of the most respected members here and is who i seek for almost all of my Nem advice... due to his help i've become very successful in keeping nems...

good luck with your nem but i agree with Todd....

at least shoot for a 40 gallon breeder with some good lighting... if you wish to go LED the AI sol's are fantastic and they make them in a nano size..

Good luck!

If it were a bubble tip- I would say do what you want, But even short term a lta is too big for the pico tank. I do understand your water volume is greater- but sq footage wise not a good idea- and getting a flow that would allow filtration and not disturb the anemone would be difficult. Trade it for a BTA.

i know 8 watts doesn't sound like alot but the par graph that marine depot provided shows it puts out some light. i really believe the nem moved out from underneath b/c i was too much light. the light is only about 10" from the sand bed. the guy at marine depot said at that distance this light can grow anything. i would have to think they know what they are talking about as well.

hey i appreciate your response, really i do, but the wife didn't like the bubble tip nems and i was afraid this light would have been too much for the bta anyway given the intensity and distance from light source. she is really trying to get interested in the hobby, but everytime she picks something she says it seems like i'm always telling her how she can't have it for one reason or another. therefore, i just couldn't tell her no again eventhough i knew it probably wasn't a good idea.

i guess what i'm' looking for is alittle advice for the situation i'm in already. i can't really get to it very well in the spot where it is right now anyway

Yeah that was one of the things I hated about having a pet store- constantly telling people they couldn`t get things. Of course if they were to read and become educated on what they wanted to do- they wouldn`t try to put oscars in 10 gallon tanks. But since you have a animal that gets much larger than a oscar in a smaller tank- what can be done. It may survive- but LTAs that survive have a habit of going from looking like they should be 3 or 4 inches to 12 inches when happy. I am all for people doing what works- and wish you luck- but I would upsize the tank if you must persist in having a LTA.
