My 400 gallon in-wall Miracles Reef Tank

Alphabet,

I don't know any thing about the water jet you are talking of??? Is that something where they take a huge piece of glass and cut the center out and use the outside edge for the bracing?

Some of the pictures were on a different server and the address has just recently been changed. I will see if there is a way I can get them to still work since I can't edit the post to change the address.

Alphabet,

I can not fix the links, but if you right click on the non working image box, then click properties, it will give you the photo address. It will look like this: http:///www. high-velocity.org/saltcity/album_pic.php?pic_id=592.jpg.

If you leave everything the same and just change the web address, it will take you to the missing photo. The new web address is: salt-city.org

The link address for the picture above would be: http://www.salt-city.org/album_pic.php?pic_id=592.jpg

this looks very neat, I especially liked how you hid the lockline, thats such a awesome method of doing it!!! very nice build, do you have pic's of the walkway? I couldn't find pictures of it yet if you've posted it because i was manually looking through everything. exactly how big is that cap by the way?

Corivus,

I don't think I ever took pictures of the walkway since it was all installed. I will try to get some in the next few days, as well as some of the frag tank.

The cap is about 2' X 2'

I Got Wood!

I Got Wood!

Saturday AM the first round of interior trim was installed.

Next will be the canopy. It will look the same as the bottom except the doors will be shorter. They will open as regular doors for quickly throwing in food or for major maintenance the whole top will open like a toy box lid.

After the top doors are installed the finish trim including crown molding and 5 wood cut plaques across the top will be installed. The crown will go to the ceiling. The 5 fish I choose for the wood cuts are a clown fish, yellow tang, powder blue tang, naso tang and copperbanded butterfly. There are many more beautiful fish, but I choose ones that are pretty much reef safe and that I do currently have in the system.

Soon I will get up pictures of the duct work for the exhaust system, the frag tank, and the catwalk

Here is a picture of the top side of the catwalk. I removed the 1” Styrofoam so you could see the material. The Styrofoam is much easier on the feet and knees.

Here is a picture from the bottom side of the catwalk. The frag tank sits straight below the display. The display tank overflow empty into the overflow boxes in the frag tank. There are two holes cut in each overflow box for the water to feed into the frag tank. The frag tank also has a Sequence HammerHead on a closed loop for flow. It is feed through a baffle with 6 jets on both ends and sides of the tank (12 total) and the flow is switched right to left with an actuated ball valve every 3 min.

The frag tank overflows into the sump which sits touching the end of the frag tank. The bottom holes in the sump overflow feeds two skimmers which empty into the sump.

wow thats really nice looking I love the catwalk idea, hrmmm maybe when I get a nice covered garage the misses will let me do something like that. very cool setup, is it bad that I like the back end better then the front?

Cathy8424 - Your display tank is simple beautiful. One day I will go back to this post to set up my own in-wall display tank.

I had some friends over at my house this past weekend and one of them was an interior design. He had the following comments:

1. The wood cover took away the thunder from the main display tank. He said the first thing he noticed is the wood cover and not the tank. He said the wood cover needs to be blended in with the walls to bring the tank out. He would recommend painting the wood with something off white, and may be using a sponge to tap over the paint while it is wet to create some sort of sponge like look.

2. The curtain above the tank doesn't match well with the wood cover. It should be replaced with the same wood used in step 1 above.

Of course this is just his opinion. I am sorry if this feedback offended you in anyway.

The curtain is temporary. Theres a wood canopy yet to be built.

I'am no interior decorator, but I do watch HGTV, it looks awesome just like it is!

It would be totally awesome with the matching canopy. Personally, I like the oak wood the way it is too. painting over the wood would make it look cheap I think.

Kimha,

As Bax stated, this is just the 1st of three stages of the trim work. This week, today or tomorrow the top door section will be installed. Then the crown molding will be installed in the next phase.

No offense taken on the interior design. Different folks have different ideas for different reasons as to what is cool. Personally, I will NEVER paint good quality wood! I know it is pretty much vogue to paint all wood, including kitchen cabinets these days, but I too think it is cheap and tacky. And, I am old enough I don’t give a hoot about being vogue. I like what I like regardless of…. If I were to do any thing, I would paint the wall a darker accent color, but never the wood.

To me paint is for cheap wood and folks that are more budget minded, who don’t want or can’t afford to pay for better grade wood and the extra labor to have it finished correctly. To me good quality wood finished correctly is truly a thing of beauty. There is no comparison between it and static painted pressed wood!

I spent to many years living in houses that were old and the woodwork had a gazillion layers of cracked and chipped paint caked on them. After a gazillion hours of stripping and repairing it, I have no desire to EVER use paint on any of my woodwork! I feel the same way about wall paper too. If I want borders, I will use paint and stencils. Stripping wall paper and re-mudding the wall after words is no fun! I have done way to much of that too.

Any way, diversity is why we have so many colors, textures and etc.... to choose form. It would be pretty boaring if every one all had white houses shaped the same, with the same beige sofa and etc.....

I think a bunch of us are like that! That side is the true challenge! Making it all fit, planning the best situation for our critters. Not to mention all the "what ifs", that bring out all the DIY projects in us. It is a never ending process and it always keeps our minds in as much perpetual motion as are reefs are.

With that in mind, here is some more of my brain storming for the Fishroom Exhaust. I am kind of proud about getting this all figured out and put together! So far it is working very well. It was 21 degrees in Kansas last night. Our furnace is not turned on and our house was still a nice tosty 66 degress this morning and the tank water was a nice toasty 77 degrees.

I have the Fishroom Exhaust System pretty much installed now. I still have some work to do on the intake side. And I need to install a backdraft damper in the Frag tank line. It is fine for the winter, but will need to be installed by the summer.

Earlier in the thread there was a hand drawn sketch of this system.

<img src="http://www.salt-city.org/album_pic.php?pic_id=637.jpg">.jpg

The Actuated dampers are controlled with an AquaController. When the temperature is to low, the heat is diverted inside the house. When the temperature is to warm the heat is diverted outside through the attic. In the winter the exhaust intake is from the house air, the warm air is warmed more and sent back into the house. In the summer the exhaust intake is from the outside air, it passes straight through the light fixture and out to the attic.
