My 500 + gallon system. Last 13 years to now. Build, Aquascaping & more. Lots of pics

Nice additions- I love Unicorn tangs!
Ever been to the Bass Pro Shop in Vegas? They have some huge unicorn tangs with long streamers and big horns! So cool!

Thank you very much! Yea, I've been there. That is one heck of a tank! Especially when the have the mermaids in it!

Wow, I really like your fish assemblage! It makes me want to do some kind of large tank/pond with a bunch of angels, tangs, etc with plenty of room to swim. You can really see a difference in fish behavior when they have a very large tank in which they can move around.

Thank you! Good observation too. I've had many tanks over the years and have found that with enough space, even fish that are typically incompatible get along fine in a larger system. My 3 flames and my lemon peel all get along great. I'd imagine that if my system was much smaller, I wouldn't be so lucky!

I have another question with the butterfly, why only one? I thought through my searching a few years ago that they can and do better in schools?

Did you add the 4th Flame angel? It's not listed on your last 'inventory' list!

The Butterfiy's are/were kind of an experiment. Never had a pyramid butterfiy before and wasn't sure how I would like him. He has however been a model citizen and is doing great.. The Longnose however did not make it. He died a few days ago which frankly did not surprise me. They can be such picky eaters and mine didn't seem the least bit interested in the food I was feeding until the day before he died. Given their beak like mouth, they are not well suited for chasing down food in a tank with high flow. Especially given that I never shut my pumps down via my feed cycle when feeding. Instead, I use my flow to distribute the food throughout my tank which unfortunately didn't bode well for the long nose.

Yea, I added it. It was pretty skinny and almost immediately ended up getting stuck to the recirculation pump strainer. Sadly, that killed it the first night. In hindsite, I should have put him in the refugium for a week or so to fatten him up as he was really tiny but I got excited and didn't think about it until just after putting it in the tank. He was actually put in the tank a couple weeks prior but found his way into my overflow. I thought I had lost it but found it in one of my filter socks where he was living for at least a week. When I found him, I got excited and tossed it back into the tank. That was my mistake. As I said, I should have put it in the refugium to fatten him up.

The other 3 flames and the lemon peel are doing great though so I will probably leave well enough alone as I don't want to upset the balance.

Today I have a Flame Hawk coming. I'm kind of excited about that as I have been trying to find one locally for a while now. They have great personalities and this one is coming from a fellow RC members tank. It should have a very nice new home!

One thing I am kind of stoked on is that the Oscellaris Clown fish finally hosted my Anemones. As I understand it, Oscellaris clowns don't typically host in Anemones. Especially tank raised ones. I do however need to get another Percula clown for my male Percula so they can pair up.

Here is my current stock list minus the Flame Hawk who will be coming later today.

Looks like I will be adding a new coral tomorrow. This is by far the biggest hammer coral I've ever seen available for sale. It's about 2' across and about 1.5' wide. I've been eyeballing this for the last few weeks. My friends fish store has been holding it for a customer whose tank was taken down. They finially relented and are letting me buy it for what I consider to be a very fair price for such a rare specimen. Hopefully it will fit where I am planning on putting it. I will update the thread when I pick it up tomorrow.

This picture I took at the LFS today doesn't do it any justice. It is absolutely huge which is difficult to judge in this photo.

Bring a big enough container, and 'secure' it from any movement, or you'll have many corals to add!... They seem to break easily!

That is definitely the plan. This certainly won't fit in a 5 gallon bucket as the skeleton itself is larger in diameter than a typical bucket. The store has a large diameter red 10 gallon bucket of sorts that I will bring it home in. Securing it for the drive will be fun but fortunately the store is less than a mile from my house. I've already got a couple smaller hammers in my tank that have grown from pinkly nail sized fragments into multi head corals. This new one however has very thick stalks with huge heads. It should be fine for the short drive and is certainly more robust than your typical hammer.

I just don't want to have to rearrange my tank to accommodate it. Hopefully it will work where I am planning to place it. If not, I'm going to have a bit of a nightmare on my hands and will have to shuffle some corals which I really don't want to do. I guess we will see tomorrow when I get this monstrosity home.

What time are you picking up? Is this at peters? I Want to stop by, haven't seen the tank since all these new additions

Yea, it's at Peters. I should be acclimating by 3:15. I figure it will be in the tank around 5-5:30. Maybe sooner. Feel free to come by anytime after 3:30.

Hammer is home and in the tank. The skeleton measured 18" wide! I just got it in about 30 minutes ago and it's already opening up. Not 100% sure this will be it's permanent spot in my tank. I will have to see how it does and how it looks there over the next few days. While it's way to early to tell, it does seem like it's happy there but there is a fair amount of flow from the near by Tunze.

Here are a couple pictures. I will take a few more in an hour or so after it's had some more time to adjust and open up.

It's sunset in my tank but I was pleasantly surprised how much it's opened up in the hour and a half since putting it in. I suspect it will be huge tomorrow when I get home from work.
