My Bigger Piece of the Reef (LotsOPics)

Here's aquestion... I have never cycled a tank. Can the partially cured marco rock be a catalist for the cycle. I was testing every 3 days and registered a very small spike. I was planning on putting sand in starting a cycle this weekend with some squid now that the water seams to be clean. Then I found this algae... If algae is growing... did the cycle already happen???

cycles are not that defined. often times people think their cycle is over and then have a massive HA outbreak. My only suggestion is to let it run its course. It is painfully tedious and boring but wait it out. Go ahead with your plan, but I am skeptical that you really even need the squid. That algae is most probaly just the very beginning.

Let it run for a couple of weeks and monitor water quality. Then put in a couple of very hardy small fish that you would like to keep. Let them live in the tank for a couple of months and then assess the situation. It's so hard not to rush, but extremely important that you don't.

Patience young grasshopper!

great build, i can tell you how fast i added livestock and corals in and how fast i lost them? walking pass the large display every night without fish is tough. i remember all the different outbreaks i had to go through the first few months and learn the hard way.

is Barry still on his meds again? i thought this was over a long time ago, J maybe you can give him a quick fix for the time being :D

I'm ok!!! My wife thinks I'm crazy because I can look at the tank for hours and there's no life in it.

I put 80lbs of sand (60 regular & 20 live) in tonight... and a little food to try and start a bigger cycle.

you admire your work, this is normal after the build. tell her your plans as where all the corals will grow as tank mature.

tell her to go get you a drink and leave you alone! ;)

If she's anything like my wife, I can tell you exactly what that will get you...the drink poured over your head.

She asks what my last slave died of...I tell her back talk! ;)

ouch. I don't have that problem I guess. My wife was boasting to our cashier that she lets me do whatever I want, and I suddenly got very worried.

After she poored it on my head... my special wife would do something extra special with the glass. If ya know what I mean?

The sand really brought it all together. I am ecstatic. Also glad that a tank of this size only took 80lbs.

Sand storm...

Left... My plan for this area because it is a lower flow area... is to put a pair of hard working gobies in that cave or maybe a gobie / shrimp team.

 Yeah...if only things stayed where we wanted them!

looks awesome man... the sand really does bring it all together. Have you done some flow tests on the foam yet? How much can it handle?

Nothing ever stays were you want it to unless you glue it down and I don't think your goby would be to happy about that :D . Then again you could just spoon feed him sand.

The front right return jet is aimed at the pillar and it is fine. I figure with the return pump open half way and the CL pump open full... I should be moving over 6000 gph and everything is good.

You can lead a gobie to the corner... but, you can't make him stay there.

I tried to make a real nice cave there. Of course... I made several nice caves in my other tank and all three of my gobies live in the same one.

I must say the aquascaping is very unique, and very very well designed. It looks great.

Does that bother you that the two front columns don't receive any direct light? It would bother me. Looks like you won't be able to keep anything light loving on the front-most part of the columns, the parts that viewers see first....unless you can supplement those spots with extra lighting.
