My Bigger Piece of the Reef (LotsOPics)

Nothing will tick you off more as finding pieces of foam floating on the surface of your reef. But I know a lot of reefers have been very successful with this, and I can't wait to see it in person. Love that Aquascape!

Great work on the tank. Impressive. I was just thinking, I've read in a few places about people that have recipes for making their own rock. Would taking that recipe work for filling in around the live rock that you placed on the egg crate instead of using foam and an epoxy. I don't know what kind of weight that would create or if you would have to reinforce the egg crate. Would that hold up better in the long run and also not having to worry about UV from MH lights?

Probably... In fact, I wish I had explored that option. I'm not sure if it would be better or not. I just think I should have checked into it.

10 gallons and of water and 1 gallon of vinegar with 2 powerheads. I'm figuring on 2 1/2 days in the soup and then I'll rinse it, dry it and see how it smells.

is it fresh water or NSW mix with vinegar???

It was RODI. The rock did not get completely cooked... but I wanted to be able to finish the job in the tank. If you really want to clean the rock... I would say 2 weeks with more vinegar and some water changes.

I love this tank design.

It will be interesting to see how the foam holds up to salt water.

I have used this type of foam on many home projects. It holds up pretty well over time. It will become dark yellow and brownish over time. It also turns brittle, but it does not break off on its own.

I have never seen it used this way, so it may be a hit if it all holds up. I think once it becomes populated with organisms and coraline it will be fine.

I want to also say (not wanting to start this again..but) that your skimmer is under rated for the size of the tank.

At BEST, any skimmer on the market is overated by 2X. As someone else previously said, it will function, but it will not keep your tank as "clean" and nutrient free as it should be.

What this means that your Nitrates and Phosphates will raise quicker and to much higher levels, since your skimmer will not be "pulling" out the organic waste matter at the rate it should.

The results of this will be the typical algae manifistations along with all the other "fun stuff"

"The reef aquarium Vol 3" does an excellent job of expalining this in detail.

Increasing the flow rate to the skimmer, does make the skimmer more efficient or increase its ability for waste removal. Thats not how it works.

There are several very good skimmers in the market that will do an excellent job in handling your tank much betetr than the one you have.

Again, this meant to be a suggestion from someone who learned about this the "hard way"

At this point... I guess all I can do is hope that you are wrong. Even with the smaller pump... the unit is rated at 450 and I am only running 216 gallons in the system. So far the skimmate is great.

This is what I was thinking. I do not understand how everyone is saying that this skimmer is not going to work to "clean" the tank. The skimmer is over 2x the tank volume, I would say that this is PLENTY for the tank. . . . I do not understand anyones logic on this subject. . . .

here is a good comparison

A 300 horse power Ferrari doesn't feel the same as a 300 Horse Toyota. Both manefacture claim 300 horse power. The same as skimmer many manefacture claim their skimmer will handle certain volume but depend on the brand some will do and some will not

But if they claim it has 300hp, I am sure it has at least 150hp after it leaves the showroom floor. Don't take it personal, but that was a terrible analogy. . . . Yeah, I understand what you guys are saying, but your logic has no sense behind it. You analogy just made you look even worse in my eyes. I understand all manufactures have their own ratings and that they can be bias, but I would like to think that they are with in good reason, not to mention, like I said earlier, the skimmer is rated by the manufacture for double the tank volume he has. Kannin, the skimmer is fine, do not waste your money upgrading.

Just my 2 cents... I was running the G4 on my 120 and it was doing fairly even though I had a relatively high bio-load. There are a few modification kit available and I'm sure some of these guys could come up with some great mods as well, if you need it. You could always add another one if this one falls behind. A lot of people think that two skimmers is the way to go anyways.

I have used ASM's before I have used just about all of them out there lol. They are good skimmers there not great but there good. If you SPS dont look good with it in there add another one or upgrade should be ok but even though it is rated double the tank it will be close

The real reason I bought... is to give Jonathan something to do. He loves to do mods for the newbies in the area. Just looking out for my neighbors.
