My Black Ocellaris pair are spawning!!!

Well today is day 3 with no deaths. I think its gone. I guess the formalin / large water changes worked but they just weren't finished dying yet.

Everything else is as normal the male is healing nicely.

I eggs again. I've ordered a 2kg bag of Otohime C2. I don't know where I'm going to keep all that food yet. I suppose I'm going to freeze some.
 
I found this fish last weekend. I've never seen a misbar like it. The rear bar is absent. You can see a slight discoloration where the bar would be. I wonder if this is the guy that had his tail bit off... I thought I'd post some pics.

I've added 2 phosban reactors to my system to combat the yellow water I've been experiencing. I think its mostly due to the Otohime. It doesn't hurt anything but it looks nicer when I'm delivering fish in clear water rather than the yellowish look I had before. I'm not sure how much you are supposed to fill these things as I bought them used so I have no instructions. So anyone who knows please let me know if it looks ok.

Here's a comparison shot of the water colour. Please forgive the dirty tanks I clean them every weekend so this is a weeks worth of buildup. Feeding 4 times a day makes a big mess of the tanks. Although they used to get worse than this after a week. I think as it matures its handling the nutrients better. The one on the left is not connected to the system. The one on the right is.

Great thread! The success you are having is amazing. I know that you are not doing to for money so much, but has the sale of clown fish at least offset the cost of all the equipment / food / supplies? It looks like breeding clowns gets addictive, but reefing in general is! It looks fun to try, but I bet you had no idea how far you would take breeding them when you saw the first eggs.
 
Thank you. No its not a big money maker. It does however help offset the costs of the hobby for me. Which is great.

It's not unusual for a enough damage to have been done in the course of such disease issues that mortality rates continue for a few days after the disease is cured. In any rate, glad to hear you licked that problem and the male is also healing nicely :)

The one on the left probably has over 400 fish. I can see I'm going to be adding growout tanks.... (looks over shoulder to make sure the wife isn't watching me type this) Its been going really well actually. They are spawning like clockwork and I'm getting very little die off now. Your luck will turn FB.
 
I sell them about once a month. It should be interesting when the more recent / more successful batches start to get to size. Things are going to get real crowded around here. Which is ok. I've been well below capacity for some time.

Not ask int for buying reasons...how much are you selling them for?? The reason I'm asking is there is a locl breeder getting $20 each and the LFS is selling them for $65....and my B&W layed last night but ate them all..couldn't get pics but will next week if they keep going
 
I'm not going to discuss prices here sorry. If that's what he's getting for them good for him. Keep in mind if you start breeding the same thing you may flood the market and drive his / your prices down. Depending on how much success he's having / you have.
 
rkelman - I was hoping that you could confirm what I believe I read in this thread regarding your feeding regimes. You at one time cultured phytoplankton, but no longer do so. Also for feeding it is simply rotifers and then a switch to various size grades of otohime? No Phyto, no BBS, correct? Lastly, you are using Rotifer Diet to feed the rots?

Sure Landlord. When they are young I feed Rotifers and tint the water green with the Rotifer Diet. As they get older (5 days approx) I stop tinting the water and keep them on Rotifers (that have been fed with Rotifer Diet) after Meta (7 days in my case) I start them on Otohime A and suppliment with Rotifers. I continue this for about 4 days then discontinue the Rotifers all together. You are correct. I no longer culture Phyto and I don't feed BBS at all. Its not necessary and is time consuming. As was culturing phyto. Its alot of work now that I have 8 tanks on the go. Cleaning / water changes every week are alot of work and I only have so much time.

When feeding <5 day old fry you not only feed with rotifers (cultured using the above method) but supplement with some of the Rotifer diet to tint the larval tank green? << What are your reasons for doing this particular extra step of tiniting the water? How does this "tinting" benefit the <5 day olds? or is this simply a co-culturing thing to keep the rotifer count up? I think I am missing something here???

Tinting the water has a couple advanages. It keeps the Rotifers eating up until they are themselves eaten thus increasing their nutritional value. (and their reproductive rate) In the first couple of days at least I don't have to keep adding more Rotifers because they reproduce as fast as they are being eaten. once the fry get to be 3 or more days old they eat alot more and I have to start adding more.

The other advantage is having the water tinted green keeps the fry from staying on the walls of the aquarium. When the water is clear they will stay on the glass and starve to death. You can see as soon as you tint the water they come off the walls and start eating. Its been said its a depth perception thing. I don't know but it works.

Some say that using live Phyto decreases the buildup of ammonia. I don't believe this to be true. I've not noticed any difference in ammonia buildup since switching to Rotifer Diet.

Thanks for all you've shared in this series. I've read avidly for a long time.

Maybe someday I'll try too; my ocellaris "pair" just finally found my anemone yesterday. Hopefully they'll decide to be true pair.
