My Black Ocellaris pair are spawning!!!

Size isn't really an issue. Its when they reach sexual maturity. I think mine were about 1 1/2 to 2 years old the first time they spawned.

Nice pictures those tanks are packed looking, good to hear that the male is healing well on his own and that the fouled tanks seemed to have cleared up.

Ok I'm looking for some advice here. My stand alone tanks keep getting a bacterial bloom. This morning I went downstairs and all the fish in one tank were sitting on the bottom breathing heavily. The water was cloudy. I did a 75% water change immediately. None have died yet and they don't seem to be sick so I'm assuming its not the same bacteria I had before. What should I be doing to avoid this? Treat it? Furan 2? I'm cleaning the tanks once a week and doing 50% water changes weekly on these tanks. I am feeding 4 times a day. Maybe I should cut back to 3? I never get anything in the growout system so I'm thinking lack of filtration? I have a Hydro 3 sponge in each of the stand alone tanks. Should I use something bigger? More flow?

Most bacterial blooms in rearing tanks tend to be the result of accumulated waste. My recommendation would be to increase cleaning and water change frequency. I find going more than about 2 or 3 days between cleanings leads to cloudy water issues.

I think I will start siphoning the tanks every other day. And continue with my current water change schedule. I never used to have this problem but when you have 400 fish in a tank compared to the 100 I used to get...

I love the fish in your Avatar forddna. You got it from Doni right? Her fish are beautiful.

Ok I did a 100% water change and they look better. Actually I switched tanks completely. I lost 5 of them but you have to expect that when netting such young fish. (Obviously params were matched) The new tank is a 10g with an AquaClear 20 Its new so the filters aren't seasoned. I put 3 pieces of live rock and stuffed 4 bioballs into the filter with the sponge and biomedia that came with it. I thought the rock was going to be enough filtration. I did that yesterday and tonight I see the water looks like its getting cloudy again. I vacuumed it out again and put a sponge filter in as well. I'll check it again in the morning and do another 100% water change in the morning if necessary. I may have to resort to antibiotics. What a pain.

Well they are all good now. My male has healed up pretty good although his fin is still split. I had to clear out a tank for some new arrivals. I saw this pair or Ocellaris in a GBTA and had to have them. They are nearing maturity and who knows maybe they will lay for me. I'm going to QT them for 30 days. I bought the GBTA and the rock it was on because it was so stuck in it. Better to spend more than I wanted then to risk hurting it. Hopefully the clowns go back to it when they are re united. Everything else is really kind of boring. They hatch I feed / they grow.. Its become pretty routine. Kind of boring as far as threads go :) Hopefully my new arrivals will spice it up soon.

My black occelaris just had babies last night. I didnt even know they laid any eggs until I saw little babies swimming around last night with my flashlight

Im going to start setting up some stuff for the next batch. But is it normal for them not to protect there eggs? Because I didnt even see any in the first place...And they where acting pretty normal except for yesterday I stuck my hand in the tank to fix something and they attacked me.

What are you using for the greenwater/rot enrichment? Same stuff as the beginning of the thread?

I know that too much phyto can be a pain, as it will cause many of the problems you are experiencing with the bacterial toxins. Also, if you are using an instant algae (IA) that is past its expiration that will cause many problems all on its own.

Thanks FB.

Magga Pie: Are you sure the larvae you saw are clown larvae?

1deR9_3Hy: I'm using Rotifer Diet from Reeds. I was using live phyto. The Rotifer Diet is still ok for dates. I think it has more to do with having 400 fish in a 15g tank :)

What other larvae could they be?
The fish I have are A radiant wrasse, 1 chromis, midas blenny, and 2 chalk bass which never hang out together.

Beats me lol. Could you miss an egg mass for 8 days? They are bright orange at first.. Was it before or after the lights were out for the night. I hope you are right.
