What is in the bucket. I see you have clipped what I assume is the brine shrimp hatchery onto the side. Is that your ROTS?

i am just a little bit curious as well, lol.....

FB thats my BBS culture. The pail is just regular water heated up so the hatchery is at 80deg.

I can tell my Otohime apart by looking at it.. Maybe you got all the same one lol.

I love my cheap yellow clamps...

The camera is AV which is aperture priority. A-Dep is depth of field mode.

i can tell that some of the otohime is different the larger stuff is easy it's the bags of a-c that all look very similiar i have a email into reed to see what they say.

I am going to try and setup something to heat the bbs cultures and see if that helps.

I love my cheap yellow clamps as well very handy to have around.

I will try the av mode and see if i can get a better picture.

the larvae seem to be doing well and growing a few of them went nuts this morning when the bbs hit the water, that has to be a good sign.

Well i had a very close call over the weekend with my reeftank & larvae tanks. Apparently around 1:00am Sunday morning we lost power due to a chp officer taking out a power pole about a half mile from my house. I woke up on Sunday morning around 7:00 am to find the power was out; I quickly went to check on the tank and my jaw just dropped, there were fish laying on the sandbed gasping for air and a couple swimming around kind of erratically. So off to the garage i go in a flash to get the generator fired up and start running extension cords to my tanks. Within 15 minutes of having the tanks on life support everyone started to come around and i am happy to say that i did not lose a single fish; not even any of the baby clownfish. Even though the tanks had been without power for almost 6 hours.

It took the pg&e crew all day to restore power. In total we were out for 16 hours.

I got very lucky i feel because i am almost certain that another 15min. or so without the generator running and the results would have been devastating. Just thought i would share the importance of having back up power for your system, you never know when you are going to need it.

Yeah i got real lucky that i woke up when i did or the outcome would have been horrible. I watched my naso swimming upside down and my angelfish laying on the sandbed; i thought for sure i had lost the larvae as well. Although their tank got a little cold no losses i was actually surprised.

I don't know if my larvae are just going to be slow to develop or what is going on today is the 16th day i think and although they are getting bigger; and only 2 of them are not real orange in color the rest still show no signs of stripes?
they are being feed otohime A and bbs.

I wonder the pair was sold to me as true perc's do they develop slower?

I still have not been able to get a good picture of them the ones that i have taken have not come out real well even with messing around with the settings in the av mode.

I did setup my bbs hatcheries with a heater to see if it makes a difference.

Hey, I am also new to hatching clown eggs ! I have not had any luck using a tile, so the other night I had to use a turkey baster ( with a sm piece of straw attached ) to gently scape off the eggs. I have 5 that are 2 days old and munching on rotifers!! The rest of the batch had already hatched . I found out the hard way to get them, but will be ready next wk when the next batch of eggs are ready !!!

wow--close call--glad the outcome was positive

I have been discussing the same issue --I am worried with this new job I will be out of town for 7 hours a day.
I had a gas generator also but only I can operate it
I have been looking into battery backup systems that will run my pump a mag3600 which uses about 160 watts per hour
Most of the systems--are expensive and you only get a couple of hours max
There was an idea put out on this thread of using two car batteries and an inverter
Just wondering what your thoughts are on this
I need a system where all my wife has to do is push a button

capn_hylinur,
I have used an inverter with a marine battery while camping. Works great. I get about 8 hours per battery charge. I was told that car batteries don't hold the charge as long as a marine battery does.

Your wife could do this. I am a wife and I can do it. The inverter cost me about $40 at Menards. Hope this helps.

I was told that car batteries don't hold the charge as long as a marine battery does.

For the gel batteries that is true, depending on the size you get. For a regular deep cycle it's just a matter of the battery being able to withstand being drained to empty and recharged multiple times, something that a car battery can't handle.

For air backup, AZOO makes a nifty little air pump that has a small lead acid battery. You can leave it plugged in, and it will switch to battery power when the electric goes out. It's also very good for transport and collecting trips.

:bounce1: :bounce1: Guess what i finally saw last night?:bounce1: :bounce1: Last night was day 16 and i finally have 1 larvae with a single stripe on the head. :celeb1:

it may have taken longer than what everyone else has posted but hey it's there and i guess you could say i am just a bit excited:D

Why did the tile not work for you? I am no expert by any means but i would not recommend "scraping the eggs off" The larvae need a hard surface under them in order to be able to push out of their egg sacks. If you go back a couple of pages on my thread you can make a snagger to catch the larvae the night that they hatch.

Why, how cold is it there?

I live only a couple of miles from the ocean so our temperature swings a bunch during the day.
Right now the 5 day forecast looks like this:
Toady 54°-69°
Thr. 55°-71°
Fri. 55°-72°
Sat. 54°-67°
Sun. 54°-68°
We have a fog bank that moves in & out with the offshore winds this time of year. I had to use my wipers this morning on my drive to work, it burns off mid-morning and returns at night. Since my whole breeding setup is in my detached metal (non-insulated garage) it swings with the ambient temp.

The heater is kind of an experiment at this point and was a suggestion to try, i use the decapped bbs and even after 48 hours i would guess i was getting around 60% hatch rate, even with the heater in there the temperature this morning read 74.

:wavehand: Hi capn_hylinur just a quick note i wanted to thank you for all of your hard work in assembling some of the other threads here on Rc.

The thread that you linked to is an interesting read and is something that i need to look into some more. I need to re-think how i want my system to be setup, Sunday is probably the longest that we have been without power that i can remember. A block away from my house use to be a hospital, and although they have their own back-up systems in place they also are high on the list of priorities for having power restored, so we kind of benefited from that for all of our other outages; but the building is not used for that any more so our priority status is not there anymore either. I do have the generator (i live in earthquake territory) so you never know when you might need one.

The one weak point that i have right now is i have to (or someone) has to setup & switch over to the generator, which is not really a big deal and only takes a couple of minutes to do, but as i found out if your sleeping well you get the picture i am sure.

Dazed: True Percs develop waaaay slower than many other clowns. Congrats on the stripe :)

Capn_hylinur: There are generator systems that are automatic if you can swing the high costs. They hook to your gas line so you never worry about fuel. They startup in seconds after a power outage with no input from anyone. Pretty awesome. You'd probably drop $10k on one though.

Funny you mention that i went back and looked through Joyce's book and it pretty much says the same thing. I was really starting to wonder what was going on; because i see pictures and people state things like "this is at 8 days old" and i just scratch my head thinking mine don't look any where near that.

I was getting frustrated it's not like i am trying to raise them in freshwater & feeding them breadcrumbs or anything.

I checked on them at lunch and i now have 3 with the stripe on the head and according to Joyce's book it could be months before they show the 3rd stripe for perc's.

So i guess i will just keep plugging away at it. I am at a bit of a crossroad for the first time though i have eggs that should hatch tonight but i do not have an empty tank to put them in, all day long i have been trying to decide if i have time for more than one larvae tank.

Congrats on seeing it transition from fry to an actual baby clownfish. Please keep posting pictures so we can see what you are seeing.
