My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

Hey agsansoo,

Exanding, wow sounds great... I will have to back and do some reading.

FB

Well I'm trying to raise my first batch, got thru the first 40pages and 3/4 of the way thru this one (skipped the middle up to the new growout tanks).
Not sure the fry count at this point but I know it is harder to keep the rotifers fed than the fry. I've gone thru 1/2 bottle of rotifer diet and over half the large bottle of dt's to keep the water green in the 5gallon culture bucket!

I had a split hatch so i have 3/4 day old fry and will be trying a small amount of bbs tonight (started hatch last night)

I need to get an ammonia badge in the tank but I ended up calling on some nerves and there is about 3lbs of liverock in the tank with the fry, so far no problems.

Gresham any chance of getting those bh from you was hoping to get the rest of this plumbing done over the long weekend. I tried calling your office this morning but i got a voicemail for a linda i think it was. I have a couple of questions for you as well. I may be headed to dc in the next week. Let me know thanks.

You got them OK, right? Call my cell when you get a chance, or email me, and I'll give you my office number, it's kinda new. No Linda here

Hey Dazed,

Whats going on I see your still at it. How has your progress been. I like your new setup. Still no time in my schedule to get started again and have not had eggs in a long time.

FB

FB; good to hear from you  my numbers are still the same as before lol; some batches just do better than others; i did take a break a couple of months back the female just stopped laying not sure why but since she took a break i did the same, right now just working on getting the new system up & running.

Gresham yes i got them thank you very much; Chad dropped them off on Friday, but it turns out they were to big, the more i looked at it i just didn't think there was enough room to remove the acrylic & still make them work, so i have them to give back to you. :) I will give you a call

make sure to rinse the bbs real good & do not add any of their culture water to your growout tank, i start introducing otohime a on day 4 but only for the first feeding when the lights first come on for the day; i have found that's when they are the most hungry & are more willing to start trying a different food; i think their tummy's over-ride their brains, whatever you do make sure you taper & overlap anytime you introduce a new food source, don't just stop one and start another, they need time to adjust.

Got the otohime and more rotifer diet on the way as well as a bottle of DT's, the fry are bordering on metamorphosis, I think I have 10 of them. My pair laid down another batch of eggs so I have about 6-7 days before I'll need to move fry to a growout tank and revamp the tank I used for this hatch. I have a 20H tank on hand and I think I'll use for growout. I'll be using live rock again in this tank. Thanks for all the input!

I'm fine ... I'm not breeding cardinals right now, since my breeding pair died. I did go looking this weekend for a pair of onyx clowns, no luck so far.

did you save any of the offspring or did you manage to sell them all off? Are the onyx still fetching a crazy price tag down south?

i think you will find the otohime as a great food source, i use it all the time, i also use the roti-diet hd though just a little bit goes a very long way, i try and not move mine until they are at least a month old or more, or they may go into shock on you & die right away, if you have to move them don't use a net or siphon, i try and just scoop them out in some kind of container with lot's of water to keep them from stressing out on you.
A quick video of some of mine chowing down on the oto:

Sometimes there is just not enough hours in a day had another double clutch event happen in my tank, first picture is not so great because someone needs to clean their acrylic :spin2: second picture is the aftermath of what's left over :eek2:

Ok so to address some of the pm's & emails i have received yes the project is still ongoing & not finished, but to tell the truth if you had any idea of what's been going on around my place for the last 2 weeks, you would be surprised that i have gotten anything done, i know i sure am. Anyway's on to some progress pictures & updates: The wood for the second stand has been cut & painted, the drains, bh's & return pieces have been finished up for the most part i still need to finish the last bit of plumbing for the returns to the top two tanks hopefully this weekend. Here are some pictures of all the above.

One of the issues i have had with this project is finding a second sump to use for the growout tanks; I have also had a long standing issue with my current sump under my dt, the issue was with the height of the sump, it made it impossible to remove the skimmer for regular maintenance; (meaning it's been in there far to long without seeing a good vinegar bath) So i decided to remove the sump from under my dt & use it for the growout tanks; but of course that means i needed to construct & new one for the reef.

going to be replaced:

A little trick i learned a long time ago when you are making your own sump; when you have your glass baffles cut have your glass guy cut a 1/4" off of all the baffles that are placed on the bottom of the sump; this makes it so much easier when siliconing them in place, because your not fighting against the existing silicone on the bottom seam; (Also a good idea to have the edges buffed so they are not sharp at all)

once cured i tested the baffles for leaks all good to go

all put back together & running on the reef; skimmer is now easy to remove & clean

So what to do with a sump that has been in use for 2 years under my reef????? well a good vinegar bath of course

All cleaned up & ready for it's next use

and that's where I'm at so far

Looking good!

Both my second and thrid batch I had 100% mortality. My first batch I still have 7 left all are developing black on their fin tips! I am on C1 of the otohime and they are chowing down on it. They are all clustered on top of my heater constantly even though the tank temp is 82F. I think they just like the hot tub effect :D

I have another batch that I am leaving as I stressed out the pair last time pretty bad and i need to get things figured out and my rotifer cultures back in check before I crash them.

Just a quick post/update lol..... got the ro/di system moved out of the way, hopefully got the wall/baseplate area that has been leaking when it rains all sealed up; & moved the rack system towards it's new home:beer:

Thanks; it just seems as soon as i get something done something else comes to mind; oh well.
Sorry to hear about the 2 batches did you loose them right after hatching? glad to see that you got the otohime all of mine seem to do real well on it.
What i do is keep my airstone or sponge filter bubbles under the heater it helps to circulate the heat in the tank & it seems to discourage them from hanging out by the heater as you described. Good luck with the next batch & let me know how it goes.

All right NOW we're cooking with gas :) Great to see it in place, I'd still love to see a "false" wall for thermal protection though. I'm back for a few days, I'll try to make it by after work on Friday.
