My C. marginalis

You've got 16,000 posts so I assume you've read about making feeding stations for them out of pvc, but I figured it couldn't hurt to mention :)

Yes, I saw it in the CBB primer. I plan to make one with a magnet so it can be attached to the glass, instead of just on the floor. 30" tall tank and all :)

He can peck apart larger pieces, but it's easier for him to eat minced food. He'll swallow 2" long slices though!

Well, less than great news, but not terrible. He's not eating as heartily, and his breathing is very fast and extreme in the sense that his gill movements are much "bigger" for lack of a better term. It's been a few days like this now. Something is definitely up. I see no other signs of disease. Thoughts? I was thinking of starting cupramine just in case... Or prazi?

http://www.chucksaddiction.com/disease.html Most of the disease stuff is lower down.

Rapid breathing could indicate an infestation of the gills, which could be ich, tremadodes, flukes and probably more I'm sure.

I would now be thinking that spot could be indicative of something. If it were my fish, I might try to contact Kelly Jedlicki or Leebca directly. I've been away from RC for awhile, but they were they best people I knew of a few years back.

I can't find it anymore, but Kelly had a chart for dosing antibiotics and prazi orally based on weight of the fish. Depending on the problem, that can be better than just adding it to the tank water.

I've given oral antibiotics to my fish and never had any noticeable effect on bacterial denitrifiers (I see you have some rock in there).

Why not start taking the salinity down? Isn't that less stressful on the fish? But I don't know if you can treat a fish in hypo with prazi or antibiotics.

I know Kelly used to recommend feeding beta-glucan (health food store) to strengthen the fish's defenses. In my experience when you figure out the right treatment, the fish will improve rapidly. Good luck and please keep us posted and if you happen to get that chart, I would love to have it again.

Oh wow, what a disgusting pictorial! Thanks for the info Marie. He is still eating, so nothing is immediate. The large "spot" hasn't changed in a month, so I've already written that off as a scar. My problem with hypo is that it's ONLY good for ich. Too risky right now with a guess in diagnosis.

Well, he still eats....I dunno..maybe I'm being paranoid. Anyway, I didn't want to medicate without any external signs to make a diagnosis with (fins, eyes, skin all look perfectly clear). So, I did a 15 minute FW dip. he handled it well. Nothing visible fell off, so I'm still in the dark with the slightly different behavior I'm seeing.

peter.

i would like to share what happened with my marginalis too. i had it for quite awhile, almost a year. i QT-ed it for 2 months.

after about a year, it started breathing weirdly and behaving funny. it was still eating like crazy. one day it just stopped eating and breathed so hard. i took it out for a FW dip, nothing came out. it died shortly after.

i still can't figure out it's death.

I went ahead and started prazi today, since I'm planning a full water exchange soon anyways. He is still acting the same... eats at first when I get home from work, but then quickly loses interest, and swims anxiously around the tank, or simply sits in the flow of the powerhead, swimming against it. The calm, hungry butterfly I had for the first few weeks has been replaced with a twitchy, distracted anxious fish. Since I still don't see even a speck of ich or anything similar (I think it would be very obvious on all those clear fins especially), I thought prazi is a safe bet, since the behavior sort of reminds me when my C. collare had flukes.

I am open to any other thought or suggestions. Thanks!

Just reading this sounds like a possibility of velvet. You can't see it at all in the early stages & irregular breathing & change in appetite are the first signs. Once you can see the velvet sheen it's too late. If you can get a high intensity light over the tank & look real close, do it. I couldn't see it without a large magnifying glass & bright lights as the fish would swim by.

I am unfortunately pretty familiar with velvet. Thank goodness it's not that!!

He ate better last night.
