My C. marginalis

... I can't expect my tank sitter to hand feed a fish for me twice a day.

You may need to move closer to RC members then :spin1::spin2::beer:

I know you're a well established "butterfly guy" from way back, but is this the first time you've put yellow long noses in a reef?

Yes. All my early experiences with butterflies were in FO tanks.

I do have some good news. The marginalis is looking great in the reef. Zero aggression from the other fish. I was nervous... I could have been ugly. Something about long noses on butterflies apparently makes them non-threatening to other fish, like tangs. The same thing happened each time I introduced a yellow longnose butterfly.

Even better news to report. He's adjusted really well to the tank, and has begun to eat much more. No one even notices him, much less bothers him. Last night he ate scallop like the good old days... ending up with a fat belly. I'm training him to expect the food in one corner of the tank, as Ed recommended. I basicaly shoot the food down into the return line flow, which shoots straight down the back corner of the tank. I really am thrilled at the way things have turned around... I wasn't expecting him to make it.

He's a swimming zombie today, and won't make it through the night :( . This fish was one of my longest, most frustrating, rollercoaster rides, I have ever done. I'm sad, I'm ****ed... this sucks. Hopefully people can pull info from this thread and be more successful than I was at keeping this fish.

So sorry to hear!!! :( I was hopeful from your last update. I wonder what happened, you tried so hard. My condolences, Peter.

Me too!! Two days ago he was doing well, and eating well. Had you asked me then what the future would be, I would have said that I'd have this fish for as long as I have the reef he was now in.

My sympathies. This is the worst part of this hobby.

Everyone following this thread has learned from it, if that helps at all.

Well, in a moment of shopping weakness, which may or may not have had something to do with a glass of wine, I bought another marginalis. My rational is that I needed to get it to put me into the free shipping category when I bought my tinkeri/burgessi hybrid butterfly :) In reality, I just really wanted to give this fish another shot, now that I have 8 feet of tank for him.

Unfortunately he arrived EXTREMELY skinny. But PIA was great about it, and offered to extend their warranty as long as needed. So I fattened him up in QT, cupramine, and prazi. He is still skinny, but nowhere near what he was when he arrived (his skull was the thickest part of his body  ) He;s now in the 240g and eating well. I will begin training him to eat in one corner of the tank, to make sure he gets his fill.

I know, I have a few :)

I've been feeding all morning, and he eats well, not phased by the other fish. I think all the extra room (compared to the 110g) is a huge plus here. He also has no problem pushing the Muelleri and rainfordi out of his way. I wonder, is it coincidence that he dislikes other Aussie butterflies?

I would think the Marginalis & the Muelleri compete for the same food source in the wild so that could be a factor & probably to an extent the rainfordi.

From what I know though, the Muelleri is mainly in Queensland..............not sure of the distribution of the others.

Good luck with the new additions Peter.

Perhaps I worded that wrong. There really isn't any aggression. It's just nice to see a marginalis that doesn't run and hide when another fish raises its dorsal spines at it. :)

The fish got a treat today... large minced clam...

Things are going great. The marginalis has completely gained all his weight back, and looks perfect. I'm so happy I tried another one :)

Yup... they get along fine. A rare fin flare here and there, but no more than with any other butterfly in the tank.
