My clown has a goatee

Hey guys. My beloved onyx clown seems to have something growing out of her chin lol. I noticed it a few days ago and it appears to be getting bigger. I have had her for 2 years and she has never had any issues before. Her mate is spot free. She is acting normal other than this thing growing out of her face. Any ideas?

Looks like it could be a fungus. Good news is, Pimafix or Melafix can probably fix it, and it's reef safe, and you need just turn off your skimmer and remove carbon.

Thanks for the quick reply. It appears that it is something not isolated to the clown. I just saw this behind my jawfish's eye :uhoh2:

Pimafix and Melafix are garbage. It looks like either fungus or Lymphocystis. Does it appear like a cauliflower or like a cotton ball?

I have had a similar scenario.. Large white bump on clowns chin seemed to appear overnight.... Behavior of the fish never changed.. I did not treat.. within days the bump was gone, healed on its own.. I assume it was caused by some sort of physical abrasion in the tank.

Keep an eye one it and just see if it gets bigger. I would give it some time before dumping anything into my tank. Good luck they are nice looking fish.

Has worked for me at least on 4 occasions for similar symptoms. I read people say it doesn't work all the time, but when I do as instructed (turn OFF skimmer, remove carbon) it has worked great.

You are probably just seeing the issue go away on it's own.

Well I gave it a week and it was getting worse, so I treated with primafix for 7 days. I followed the instructions and turned off my skimmer and carbon for that time. She looks worse than ever. The spot on her chin has tripled in size and she is now getting the same white stuff on her cheeks. None of the other fish appear to be effected besides the jawfish. He still has the white patch behind his eye, but it hasn't gotten any worse. The other clown seems fine as well.

My tank parameters are pretty stable.
Salinity 1.025
Amm 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5
Phosphate 0
Temp 78-79

The only thing that has been unstable is the pH. With all of the hot weather the windows have been closed and the AC cranked up. My pH was getting down to 7.5 at night and wouldn't rise past 7.8 in the day. I hooked my air intake on my skimmer to a hose running outside and it has helped a lot. The pH is now pretty stable at 7.8-8.1. Could that have caused or made the issue worse? I first noticed the problem around the same time that the pH was dropping.

Sorry just now noticed the question. It appears to more like a cotton ball. It seems kinda fluffy and not real bumpy.

Cupramine + Furan 2 in the hospital tank. Please follow the directions closely and measure copper levels often.

Thanks for the info. What do you think that it is? I have a 10g hospital tank I will have to get setup. I have Furan 2 already, will have to look around for the Cupramine.

Anyone else have any input? I won't be able to get medication until tomorrow. The only thing I have on hand is Furan 2 and Maracyn. I am making RO water to fill my hospital tank as we speak.

I would start her on Furan right away and add copper when you have it.

I've seen many clowns with this problem. I think it is some kind of a parasite that embedded under the skin and caused infection.

Thanks. How would I got about using both medications at the same time? The instructions for the Furan 2 is:

Use one capsule for every 10 gallons of aquarium water
1. Wait 24 hours and repeat dose
2. Wait another 24 hours and make a 25% water change
3. Repeat this treatment for a second time for a total of 4 doses of Furan-2
4. Make a final 25% water change and add fresh activated carbon
5. Repeat if necessary

The Cupramine is
Use 1 mL per 40 L (10.5 gallons*) the first day, wait 48 hours, then repeat. Final copper concentration is 0.5 mg/L (0.25 mg/L in freshwater). Leave at this concentration for 14 days.

My experience is the same as above. Obviously something is different in this case.
To the OP. Are you dosing a carbon source? If so, it could be fueling the spread of this problem. Is the tank clean? When was the last time you changed water, and do you clean the tank when you do water changes?

I am not dosing anything. I use kalk in the topoff water, but that is it. I run Carbon and GFO. I do a 10% water change every Sunday. I clean the glass, turkey baste the rocks and vacuum the sand. The tank is one of the cleanest I have owned lol.

I had a clown that had the same thing growing on it's face and sides. They grew larger and larger but eventually went away on it's own. I did a FW dip twice thinking it was a parasite or some fungus. The FW dip did not seem to help. The behavior of the clown never changed and it continued to eat so I did not worry too much. I would just give it some time. Do you have a cleaner shrimp? Maybe they would clean it off?
