My DIY Rock/Foam Reef

<a href=showthread.php?s=&postid=11913715#post11913715 target=_blank>Originally posted</a> by Kannin
There are 4 or 5 small caves and 4 bigger "mouse hole" type caves at the sand level that have small entrances but open up inside. I'm hoping to get lucky with gobie teams taking up residence in them. I want a pair of signal gobies and a shrimp/gobie team. Here is a picture of one of these caves. The entrance is on the left about 3 or 4 inches from the glass. There is also a "pass thru" type cave, just a little to the right in this pic. There are 3 of these at sand level and 6, up higher in the rock work.

There are 4 or 5 other tight spots in the rock work where a tang could feel safe at night or even a school of chromis or anthias. There are also 8 to 10 overhangs for shrimp and such and then there are probably 2 dozen holes and crevaces for reef dwellers like blennies, fridmanis and emerald crabs.

Here's a different angle of the first area which illustrates 2 clear territories. One in front of the structure and another behind it. I think there are at least 3 big territories and several smaller ones.

Hopefully this answeres the question about hiding places...

Oh I know... I wondered when I was building it if there would be enough hiding places and it was nice to see, once I put fish in that there are.

awesome... I'm sure I missed you stocking list at some point, mind throwing up for me? What direction are you going with corals? Sorry if you have answered all this already.

Talking about foam work, check this out from a link off of invincible's blog.

Granted that kannin's is still far nicer considering the detail and design but the scale and technique are still impressive.

Not at all... as you can probably tell, I don't really like talking about my fish tanks.

I already have...

3 - yellow tangs (small)
1 - convict tang (small)
3 - banggaii cardinals
1 - lawnmower blenny
7 - blue / green chromis'
13 - hermits
20 - astrea's
5 - nassarius
2 - bristle worms

I still want to add...

1 - chocolate mimic from my other tank (medium)
5 - bartlets anthias 1m, 4f
5 - evansi anthias 1m, 4f
2 - mated pairs of clowns
1 - tamarin wrasse
2 - midas blennies
2 - signal gobies
1 - green mandarin
1 - pistol shrimp / gobie team in the front left cave
2 - cleaner shrimp
3 - emerald crabs
2 - porceline crabs
5 - more nassarius snails
1 - more bristle worm.

I'm adding some zoas this weekend from my other tank and Snowboarda has generously offered to frag some sps and bring them to me next week. I plan on having mostly polyps and lps with some sps and some anemones (isolated on the pillars).

thanks for asking.

I have some ideas... but, I thought we should wait and see what you thought. My wife's sister wants to know if you're cute and single.

Ha ha chicks dig the uniform! I take it she's from out here?

The other night... we had a friend over who grew up in Wenatchee when I told my wife about your generous offer... Then our friend asked your name and she wanted to know if Elliott was your first name or last because if it's your last, and your first name is Jason then she knows you and your cute and then my sister in law wanted to meet you and... and... and... Dude! You so do not want to live in my world. It's me surrounded by 3 wine drinking women.

LOL Thats freakin hillarious, sounds like a drunk night

I think I might have a Millepora frag for you as well by the way...

Nope... It was just a Tuesday.

Are your plans still for Monday? I need to clean my tanks.

After reading Kannin and Tiggsy's posts I decided to add a little foam to my work. The rocks are a mixture of dry base rock and DIY concrete rock. The pillar on the right was drilled and a plastic coat hanger has added for support. I then decided to make it look even better by adding foam where you could see the hanger. Let me know what you guys think of the aquascape.

Hope everyone likes my attempt at the foam. I still need to add epoxy and sand it should be set. By the way the foam I used was the DOW waterfall and pond foam that I purchased at Ace Hardware. I used this because it was made specifically for water purposes.

Thanks,
Josh
