Next is the epoxy.

Thanks for all the help in this project Kannin. Without you and Tiggsy's great posts this wouldn't be possible.

I think it will come out pretty good. I added the epoxy and sand and it looks pretty sweet. I will have to take pictures and post them later today. It is going in my 150 mixed reef. All of my rocks right now are covered with mushrooms so I am going to stack all those on one side of the tank and then place the rock I am working on on the other side. On this there will be a mixture of LPS, SPS, and Zoas. I think it will be pretty sweet.

nice, can't wait to get mine setup. Next I am going turn the rock live in a rubbermaid stock tank with some rubble from the lfs. Looks great Kannin. Keep it up with the updates.

What bulb do you use for your lights?

The lights came used with the tank... I think the two outer ones are 14k HQI and the center one is 10k. When I replace them... I will likely do 14k's in all three. I like the bluer light. I am also going to install some t-5's for supplementation... once I build the canopy.

Kannin, The producers of the show "Blue Planet" are sending over a film crew.

Thanks but, they might want to hold off a couple weeks... I'm gettin' a little cyano on my sand bed.

Something went wrong

Something went wrong

I made an attempt this weekend to do the same thing.. (well, not as elaborate).. here's a picture before the epoxy.. My plan was to put crushed coral/sand on it after it was epoxied..

I was using it more as a back drop to my real rock work. It looks fantastic with the rocks in there..

however.. it killed everything. I was upgrading from a 24g tank to this 75g.. Luckily I only had one clown fish and 4 corals (snails and crabs too). Yesterday, I filled the tank with water from the holding tank that I had the stuff in, then I moved my fish and corals into the 75g. A few hours later, stuff was dead. I'm not sure what happened...

I used finishing resin (made by Great Planes) for model airplanes (he didn't have any train resin, but that it suppose to be the same stuff).. I'm wondering if I didn't let it cure long enough? I only let it cure for about 24 hours.. how long did you let yours cure?

I'm sorry. I can't say if you used the right resin or not but, I let mine cure at about 80 degrees for 6+ hours. But, I didn't get it wet for another week or so. And then I didn't put livestock in it for another 2 weeks while I skimmed and ran carbon.

Hey Kannin the tank is looking great man.I finally got around to doing this to my 16 gal bowfront.

Man do I need a bigger tank.If you dont mind I can post a pic.Dont want to hijack your thread.Unfortuneately I was to lazy to get up and get the camera to take build pics, even though I sat there thinking about it the whole time.

I just finish building the frame of my stand as well. The tank looks like a pico sitting on the stand.I actually built the stand for a 75 or 90 gal.Just gotta see if I can find one locally.Until then I am going to setup the 16 to keep me busy.

Yeah - I think I moved a little too fast.....

I think you moved way to fast.I did mine a few days ago,and the epoxy is still a little tacky in some places. You definately need to let it fully cure.

Also for those of you that dont want to spend the money on crushed coral.I used crushed oyster shell, and it came out really good.A lot cheaper then CC.

ah well.. my mistake for following the instructions on the bottle. hahaha! Will epoxy still cure in water?

I guess the brightside is that the tank will cycle without anything in it now except for live rock. Luckily I only had a clownfish and a couple of small corals. Don't get me wrong, I hate seeing stuff die like this, but it could have been waaay worse.

What a great source of info, I would like to try this when I move up from my 75 gallon! Kannin, would you be so kind to post pics of your sump/fuge as well. Also a list of power heads, heaters and so on that your using.
