My DIY Rock/Foam Reef

Here's the two products I used... Insulating expanding foam (Great Stuff) and the epoxy resin is from Bob Smith Industries in California.

I'll try to post more pics on Monday...

I'm not seeing a huge spike. I only half cooded the rocks with a 10:1 water vinegar mix for 3 days with powerheads. My skimmer which is new and still getting broken in is pulling some good skimate.

1/28/08:
pH = 7.7
Ammonia = .25
Nitrite = <1
Nitrate = 0

2/1/08
pH = 8.3
Ammonia = <.25
Nitrite = >0
Nitrate = .5

This is the first tank that I ever started started from scratch... so I don't know for sure what I'm looking at.

Dang Kannin you sure do stay up late.Posted at 2:20am.Must be nice,the wife has stopped me from staying up late so we can work out together early in the morning.

Proof read,ha ha.I always do the same thing,read thru my posts for mistakes,dont see any,and then bam.As soon as I submit them ,I notice a word or two misspelled.Happens to the best of us.

Tank is looking great,to be honest I think once you get fish and corals in there.Your tank is gonna look better then Tiggsy's.Dont get me wrong he has a great looking tank.I just dont really like the dims of it.With your longer tank and more aquascapeing it should turn out way better.

Kannin,

This is just increadable what you've done. I am hoping to buy a 300gl tank this spring and wanted to do the same to save money and create a landscape more natural looking. How did you get this in the tank since it looks like from your pictures you did this outside of the tank?

I'm on the west coast... she only let me post at 11:22. Thanks for the compliments. I was lucky in that I had the benefit of learning from Tiggsy. I must have read his thread 20 times before starting my reef. I do agree though that the dimensions of my tank allowed me to put a lot more detailed terrain (for lack of a better word) in mine.

Um what is the point of putting rocks in vinegar water?

thanks... I was really hoping that nobody would ask me how I got it in the tank... Have you heard the old adage, "Measure twice, cut once"? Well... the pillars are both attached to the reef and they stuck out too far to fit inside the eurobracing. I had to break them off and re-attach them once inside the tank. I also had to trim some foam off because the three pieces fit too tight against the back wall. Once in... I filled in the seams with more foam.

If anyone is interested I will throw my 2 cents in. I also did the rock foam epoxy mix, it works and looks awesome. Before I applied the epoxy however i used a dremel with a small cone shaped sander attachment to remove the outer skin of the foam and give it a more porous look like the marco rock. you just sand away at the foam creating holes and a live rock look. then epoxy and sand. This method looks awesome and I have to thank tiggsy and kannin for posting pics and showing us how to diy

Where wer you a month ago? That is a great Idea. The only thing I don't like about my scape is the fact that, in places where the sand didn't stick to the foam... it is too smooth. I think it will be fine once it turns alive but your idea is perfect.

Vinnie... Marco rocks are just dried live rocks. They have a ton of dead stuff in and on them. I added vinegar to my solution to help speed up the process of getting the crap off of them.
