Hi All,

I purchased a male and female Blue throat triggers and both were about 5". The coloration was distinct where male was blue chin with yellow on the edges of the tail and the female had no blue and brown edging on the tail. So its been exactly 2 weeks and 2 days in my tank and the brown edging on the female tail is now yellow and the chin has some blue.

I guess the female is turning into a male. They were in the same tank at the store but was not sold as a mated pair.

Oh well.

So if you buy a female alone will it change into a male?

Not unless another Xanthichthys species female that is smaller is present. There will be a lot of aggression and probably some battle wounds as a result of it until the dominance of one puts the other into submission. I wouldn't suggest trying it unless you have a backup plan for when one is beat up badly. I am trying to do this with two scribbled angels at the moment in a 625g tank and I have had to remove one to the 210g sump for the time being. I have 16 fish total so its not about space or overcrowding

You think its safe to keep both male BT triggers in the same tank? Right now there is no aggression at all. The dominant fish in the tank is a sohal which chases the BT every now and then.

Keep a close eye on them, they will eventually either figure out the dominant one but you don't want the other to become a casualty from it
