My humble SPS journey - Shallow 80g

Keep your spirits high mate. I have no doubt you will recapture your mojo when your circumstances are right. I wish you well. I have enjoyed reading your journal.

Hey Josh, really sorry to hear about work. That totally sucks.
It's one thing when the tank isn't doing well and it feels like crap but not working is real life!
I sincerely hope you get back to working soon.
Try not to let the tank get you down as wel.. it's been though a lot with he Vibrant and everything else.. could just be adjusting.
You used prodibio waaay back in 2015.. did you keep up with it? I have been extremely happy with the Bioptim.. I think it is playing a part in my healthy cheato as well... biodigest didn't do anything for me..
As 'all in one' supplements go, I find the Bioptim effective and not too expensive..
Hang in there Josh!
Good luck!

We're still here supporting you Josh :) I know how tough it can be with no job and how the tank suffers from it as funds needs to go elsewhere so hang tough man, you'll get to the greener grass soon :D

I have no doubt you'll be back, bigger and better than ever! I'll keep my fingers crossed you score yourself a good job mate!

Sadly guys, early December things took a turn for the worst and I lost almost everything. I have my duncan colony, magnifica anemone, elegance coral, and a 5"-6" blue squamosa that I purchased and never posted left alive. I have a few more pieces of LPS hanging on and one acro colony that miiight be on its way out.

Basically this summer my parents changed our HVAC setup which threw off the entire house from the previous winter (they built it and we moved into it last winter), so not thinking about it because it was totally fine this summer, and being busy, once the heater was turned on it started declining almost immediately thinking back on it; and by the time I figured out there was a 7-8 degree temp swing everyday in a 24hr period it was too late. I had an apex early into this tank build which would've saved my tank, but I decided not to use it because I wanted to put the money elsewhere... not really a smart move on my part but I guess you live and learn. Needless to say, to fix the issue I had to purchase LEDs because my bedroom just couldn't regulate the heat it was putting out.

I will say this entire tank build/journey for me has had way too many depressing moments, I had to overcome some really brutal things that really stressed my coral out and every time I had to fix something I knew I was yet again setting the stage for my tank to go into another dormant period. I've never had so many issues with a tank before, at times this probably looked like my first reef tank with the issues I had. It really got to me and I lost almost all motivation because of it, the constant feeling of being in a uphill battle just isn't rewarding or fun.

With that being said, I will be taking what I have left and doing a soft coral/leather dominated reef tank with some LPS. Done well, they can be extremely beautiful and with me being in college I think the low maintenance is a perfect fit. I'll be starting a new thread elsewhere to document my journey once again and I hope I see some of you when I start it. I'm going to try to be a bit more active on here again, I basically haven't been on since summer and I'm sure there's a lot that I've missed.

I'll be sure to post the new link here when things get going, keep an eye out. :)

Bummer sorry to hear that. Seems like at some point everyone goes through some sort of lapse in this hobby...whether in their control or not. Hope to see some pictures of your tank in the future! Best of luck.

That’s crappy , Josh!
Again.. sorry to hear!
Good luck with the lps/softy tank.

Thanks. :)

I learned a lot with this experience even though it never did exceptionally well for any extended period of time, I did have some good moments. By the time my tank crashed I had decent sized pieces, even though the colors weren't anything to brag about, getting your 1" frags to good sized colonies is still a great accomplishment to have.

I'll be back in the SPS game eventually, but for now I'm going to focus on work and school.

Man, that's a bummer to read! I'm really sorry to hear all of that Josh! I'm sure your future endeavour will be much more successful and please do post the link to the new thread so I can be a pest and admire your work there as well! :)

Thanks you guys. I'll be sure to post the link when I get things going, just got a small shipment in and I should be getting some more stuff in soon.

Josh, really sorry to hear this.

It's not like I'm trying to force you back into SPS or anything but if you drive up here you can have a frag of any coral you want. Just saying. :D I don't ship, but would like some of my pieces to find a good home.

Oh man, that's so tempting, and an awesome gesture, but I think for now I need to decline. Maybe if things are looking up in 6 months and I feel good about it I might hit you up on a small frag pack. I'm working my way through college so I don't know if I want to add the stress now that I'm free. I highly considered just taking a break, but giving up altogether just isn't something I can do after having some form of a reef for almost six years now.

Thank you for the offer, I do appreciate it.

I have a 10 gallon SPS-only, fishless tank that has been super low maintenance, except for keeping an eye on alkalinity. With a simple controller, I go many days without checking the tank. Check out this thread for someone else who did it: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2555250

Getting out of SPS isn't about maintenance for me, more so about the stress involved. Thanks though. :)

For those interested in seeing the continuation of my tank, here's the link to my new thread.
