My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

What kind of starfish is that? Is it reef safe? I have a striped Serpent starfish but he hides so much I hardly see him at all.

Like Mo. That ric shot is awesome!
Yeah, he is a cool little dood! That was kind of a crap picture, but he is still shy so really hard to get a good picture of. Thanks for the comment on the ric, I was pretty impressed myself, lol!! :)

Orange linckia star, completely reef safe. He crawls all over the place, inside of the rock at times, on the glass at times, and over corals and clams if he falls. One of the non-reefer favorites in my tank! (friends always come over and comment on the star, but never mention my prized SPS pieces like the cali tort, lol).

Thanks Leo! Glad to see you back around these parts, you've been MIA.

I'm subscribed and have an iPhone, bro. ;)

I've been pretty busy, though. Sick (some fluish thing going on) and the wife and I have been house-hunting, finally. Lots of stuff going on with me, non-hobby related.

How's that Radion treating you? I followed your advice and got that MP10wES for my little tank. Will be getting another one soon since the noise is actually bearable. Thanks for the tip... just when I was getting sick of Vortechs. LOL

Nice LFS and nice shot. Smart investment on their part though!!!

Thanks tandldel. I might be what you would call "a VIP member" at my LFS, lol... :)

Get better dood! We need an update on your tank soon, I want to see how it's looking. Loving the Radion still! Growth has exploded recently and color is really coming on my SPS. Glad to hear the MP10 worked out well for you, I figured it would :)

Pic of the day, my turaki acro which is really starting to come into good color form. Hopefully another month and the base will turn a nice green with baby blue tips

I've just spent the entire night reading this thread, and eve tho I don't post much here (join date 2005 and this is my 196th post...lol), I have to say, your tank, pics and you are awesome. Just beautiful. I'm considering a cube, def subscribed.

love this tank.

Thanks cali, was just checking out yours earlier today!!

ange, the tank looks great and Mo looks happy!

Thanks aqua, I agree Mo is a pretty cool dood and glad to have him aboard. Thanks for stopping by!

Man, you inspired me to take a look back through the beginning of this thread... It's pretty nuts how far the tank has come as well as my viewpoint on things. Sometimes with more experience it's easy to look over the confusion of being a new reefer, but things like this make me remember why I always try to contribute back to the people just starting - because I had generous folks that helped me along my journey!!

Thanks for the comments and checking out my thread!

Help needed with switching stock return pumps

Help needed with switching stock return pumps

I finally decided to switch out the stock pumps for MJ1200s. The stock pumps were suctioned cupped to the bottom and pulled loose pretty easily. I was able to get the plumbing attached to the MJ1200's and with a little tweaking was able to advance them down the outer chambers. A few issues I was hoping someone could help me with:

1. Looking into the rear chambers from behind reveals that the MJ pumps are not all the way to the bottom. This leaves the intake of the pump nearly pressed up against the glass of the middle chamber adjacent to it. It appears that if I added a couple inches to the hose it would sit below the wall and draw water with less resistance. Did anyone else need to replace the hose with a longer one to make these work?

2. After taking down the simple hose connections I became aware that these did not appear very secure. I could just see the hose popping off the elbow and spewing salt water all over my office. Has anyone had problems with this? Has anyone here taken measures to reinforce the connections?

3.As the pumps are now, they are very loud!!! they are rattling/vibrating like crazy. The stock pumps were very quiet in comparison. Has anyone else had this problem? Is their a solution to reducing the noise/vibration?

I have tried searching this topic within this thread and all the splits but have not turned up any answers on this topic.

Thanks,
Shawn

I have a quick question about your skimmer that I haven't seen answered. How often do you clean it? And when you clean it... how thoroughly do you clean it (by this, i mean, completely disassemble and clean each piece).

I've been dumping the skimmate every day and I've got a build up of brown gunk on the inside of the cone. This seems like it might actually help, so I'm not sure when I should attempt to really clean that out more than running hot water through it when I empty the cup.

I must say that this thread is an inspiration to my JBJ. Thanks for posting it and providing the work in progress. Def will be using your thread as ideas but none to copy tho lol

I've got the same skimmer (AquaMaxx HOB-I) and hand wash the collection cup once a week with warm water and toothbrush. I immediately see better collection results.

I disassemble the entire skimmer every 4-6 weeks and give it a rinse out and run the pump in a vinegar bath for about 30 minutes.
