My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

So, it appears that the eBay seller is sourcing his CP from Fishman Chemical, which explains why I am getting poor results. This was confirmed by Humblefish in an exchange with the seller. Caveat emptor.

To be fair, the ebay seller is probably just as much a victim as those he is selling to. You would think you could buy from a large online retailer, and not have to worry about the purity of their medications. But there have been far too many issues with CP bought from Fishman Chemical for it just to be a coincidence, as this thread can attest. This deeply saddens me because it's something like this which can quickly derail the comeback of an otherwise very promising med. I urge everyone to research their source before buying, to be reasonably sure you are getting 99% pure CP.

Buying or getting a prescription from a vet is obviously your best option. But I understand not always feasible. Warning signs that you are not getting 99% CP include: directions to dose other than just once. CP is a "one & done" medication, so there's no need to keep adding more (unless the seller knows it's less than 99% pure). Also, expect to pay anywhere from $1-$2/gram for your CP. It ain't cheap. Anyplace selling it for $185 for 1,000 grams is way under market price, as that breaks down to only 18.5 CENTS per gram. Something is obviously very wrong with any CP for that price. :worried:

I did not mean to impugn the eBay seller...apologies if that was inferred by my post! I've sent an email to alprazo's source so hopefully he'll respond soon. The spots on my foxface dropped off overnight so I'm on the clock to get him medicated.

I used CP from the supplier on EBay, I had 3 rhomboid females that showed up with Ich. They were in my QT alone so I tried CP at 40mg per gallon and ich disappeared in 2 days. I let them there for 28 days at that dose and ich did not show back up. They are now in the middle of a prazi treatment still in the QT. I may dose cp again after prazi pro, after seeing this thread! But cp from this vendor seems to have worked for me.

BTW, when is this going to be made a sticky?

I don't think the "powers that be" on RC will ever accept CP as a "proven method" without a test kit and extensive testing. Even though there's no test kit for Prazi, formalin, antibiotics, or any other medication we use (save copper; although technically a poison, not an actual medication).

And I'd love to see some extensive testing done on the "proven method" of hypo treatment. ;)

I think this illustrates the concern around CP sourced from Fishman Chemical - it has inconsistent results. You may have received some CP from a "good" batch, while I received some from a "bad" batch.

For what it's worth, I shot a note to Bob Goemans (author of "The Marine Fish Health and Feeding Handbook"). He suggested going through a vet as the best avenue. I'm still waiting on a call back from mine, so we'll see where that leads. I'm fairly confident he'll help, since our cats have been "loyal" customers of his for many years. :) I also found a couple sources online that sell the diphosphate salt (functionally the same compound), so that might be an option as well.

You could always go to your family doctor, tell him your going on holidays in South America and need to start anti-malaria meds. CP is the med of choice for South America while Asian strains are resistant and need a different drug. Wish I had a health plan at work ;-)

I called Thomas labs about month or so ago they told me that they no longer sell or stock CP! I got a vet friend that plays the drums in my son band I'm going to ask him tomorrow to get me some that's pure CP! Will let y'all know what it cost and how much I get!

I spoke to Thomas Labs about a month ago as well, and they told me the same thing.

I'm still waiting to hear back from alprazo's contact, Louis. I sent him an email on Monday with a picture. Really hoping he'll get back to me, as my vet isn't sure if he'll be able to order any. Those of you who have contacted Louis, how long did it take for him to respond, and how quickly did he get the CP to you?

My vet says his vender does not carry it! Also when I use CP seems to work but I have noticed that my fish get very shy! Hide and such and also slow way down on eating! Has anyone else noticed there fish being shy or scared? Just seems odd to me

My vet wrote me a script and I was able to get it filled at a local compounding pharmacy. They only had 12g of CP on hand, but it's enough to treat my foxface with plenty left over for future quarantines. I think the folks at the pharmacy got a kick out of prescribing a med for fish. :)

Never heard back from alprazo's contact. :(

It was the preferred powder form. Cost me around $40US. It appears that most compounding pharmacies can obtain the powder; only one in my area actually had it in stock, though.

Ok thanks! I will ask my local drug store! What is the name on the bottle? Brand? What do the drug store call it?
Thanks Michael

It doesn't have a brand name - just ask for the base powder form of chloroquine phosphate. The retail chains (CVS, Walgreens) are unlikely to carry it. You'll need to go to a pharmacy that does custom compounding.

My fish generally get shy because I tend to keep the tank darker than normal. Their appetites on the other hand tend toward the voracious.

I have noticed a much more voracious appetite from my foxface as well. Not complaining at all, either...much better than when he went on a hunger strike during Cupramine.
