My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

What are the signs of overdosing? Anyone know?

Also, have anyone noticed any appetite suppression effects? I know a few posters mentioned it, but not sure if there are more.

I read the article, I gather it's effective on protozoa (a diverse group of unicellular eukaryotic organisms, many of which are motile- thanks Wiki). Now my economics background hasn't trained me in this field, would external flukes be considered a protozoa?

Humblefish - the reason I ask is I'm looking for a stronger med than Praziquantel that kills external flukes, but also ich. I've got the combo platter in my quarantine tanks.

My fishes never lost appetite during cp treatment. During the whole course of treatment 3+ weeks I have not notice any Ich spots visible except the first few days.

so do I have this correct.. you dose at 60-70 Mg/gallons for min of 10 days but preferred is 28 days.. life cycle. do we do water changes during the treatment.. at intervals of what.. ?

I was using simply Methlaynce blue as a protective measure.. but might start using this CP

I found a butterfly that at 80mg/gal started heavy breathing and swimming erratically, reduced to 60 and he recovered quickly. Went through 3 weeks without further issue.

No water change unless you are the 1%er that get ammonia spike during the process.

Any appetite suppression? I am concern if I start dosing again that I won't be able to get the regals to eat again.

I dropped the sal to 1.016 to help them out while I get them to eat.

Hm, I was just thinking...

Live rocks shouldn't absorb the medication right? because the medication was originally intended for human and our bone is made of calcium. If it does, then wouldn't the doctors increase our dosage of the medication to offset the loss?

so can we simply add a 250mg tablet of this to lets say a 55 gallon tank... assume not filled to the top... so the tank less some items of displacement ect.. comes to about 50mg..per 10 gallon ..wait no I have it wrong.. we need like.. what.. for 50 gallons.. need 60mg per gallon so that's... 60mg x 5 = 3000 mg / 250 per tablet.. 12 tablets...do I have this correct ?

thanks

Have you done a f/w dip to confirm flukes? I'm also pretty sure formalin will kill flukes (but not the eggs). If you want something hardcore, try De-Los (scroll down here). That kills flukes, their eggs, and sometimes even the fish. :sad2:

+1

I had poor results from using CP from Fishman. Crypt actually re-emerged when I dosed it. Once I switched to pharmaceutical grade (got a script from my vet filled at a local compounding pharmacy), the spots went away, never to return. If you don't want to use a vet, I posted a link to a source from Alfa Aesar (chemical supply company) a couple pages back.

Did you ever end up using the CP from Alfa Aesar? I'm debating on ordering from them to try it, if I cannot get a vet to give me an rx or find a pharmacy that carries it.

I have been using CP from fishman's over the past several years with no issues, have had excellent results treating Ich/Velvet

I only dose one time at 1g/25gallons, treat a minimum of 30 days

You need to determine how much CP is in each tablet. There are binders and fillers added to tablets to keep them solid, so the actual CP weight will be less than the weight of the tablet. The consensus here is 40mg/g for general quarantine, 80mg/g for active infections. So for 50 gallons that would be 2g or 4g respectively.

Ok. Got it. For 50 gallons... 2 grams for general. 4 grams for infections.
Correct.

Has anyone used the tablets?

I have read through half of this thread.. so can I ask this ...

at the beginning.. some recommendations from suppliers were quoted at using doses everyday.. some said.. one intial dose..

many have tried it according to the last pages here.

so what is the preferred safest treatment..

one dose... or
dose per day.

thank you
