My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

What's the best way to terminate CP treatment in a QT after a month? Just big water changes and carbon? And how will I know the water is 100% free of CP? I don't want to risk getting any CP water into my coral rich display when I make the fish transfers...

yep, do a large WC and run some carbon, only economical way to know it's gone is when you see algae growing in the tank, however if you are just transferring fish to your DT, just net them, do a quick dip in a bucket of DT water and release in DT :)

UPDATE

History:

Achilles with Ich treated for 90 days with CP at 40mg/g. There was no sign of disease after the first few days of treatment. However, soon after treatment ended the disease returned.

Re treated for 120 days, CP at 40mg/g and with only ambient light from the room, again no sign of disease after the first few days of treatment. Previous treatment included AI sol blues lighting coral filled trays submerged at the top of the tank, so light penetrated the tank through the trays.

It has now been 5 weeks post treatment, CP removed, and there is no sign of disease. I plan to start doing water changes using DT water every 4 days for 4-6 wks to test if there may be undetected Ich in the DT that may infect the Achilles.

Great to hear Elliot! PS your inbox is full:D

Hey guys,

Those of you buying CP from a pharmacy, what are you paying? I know someone trying to buy some from a compounding pharmacy, and it looks like it's going to cost him $6/gram! I paid less than half that just a few years ago.

Also, have any other viable options for obtaining 99% pure CP surfaced lately?

I have been reading thru the thread and I'm not sure if I missed it but what is the list so far of fish/eels/sharks/rays that can't be treated with CP? I say can't be treated because it will kill them or be extra stressful. Angels and wrasse don't do well with copper for starters so what fish and CP don't mix well together?

I believe sharks/rays are what CP was originally used on, as those are intolerant of copper.

Supposedly wrasses are sensitive to CP. Some anecdotal reports claim they just stop eating, and die about a week later.

Ive recently dosed my tank with chloroquine, and so far so good.. however after testing parameters today, ive noticed undesirable nitrate levels. Was thinking of throwing a little bit of seachem prime after doing a small water change. Will it be safe to add some prime? I have read that Prime is known to increase toxicity levels of things such as cupramine, so was just wondering if its safe with chloroquine
thx

anyone know if chloroquine phosphate expiration is any issues? i have my packet that is expire 2/2014 and was thinking of using it still.

Would like to know this as well. Mine expires this month. :(

Same boat here - mine expired in January. Have used it on tangs twice since then and neither have shown any disease, so clearly it's still good ..... Kept in the dark, so will continue to use it as needed.

Just an update almost eight months later every fish that made it through QT with CP (my post with all the fish is quoted below)is still a live no signs of diseases they even survived a 15hr trip all being packed together in a 55g for a car ride and another two weeks until the DT was setup again, I would think if something was still around I would have seen signs of it during that because of all the extra stress and small tank.
Well after 9 weeks (wanted to wait 10 but wife wanted it down since it was setup where the Christmas tree goes) fish are back in the DT, I used a 55g with live rock and a sump for a total water volume of 60gal, CP treatment was at 76mg/gal the whole time, I did 2 total water changes in the 9 weeks 20gal each time and re-dosed to get it back to 76mg/gal because nitrates were creeping up.

These are the fish I had in DT before treatment began:
yellow tang
Powder brown tang - died night before qt was ready
blue hippo tang - died during treatment(2weeks) became ultra shy and would wedge it's self in rocks whenever I walked in the room I don't think it got enough to eat because of this, its body looked perfect when pulled from tank.
naso tang
Bristletooth Tomini Tang
3 clown fish
Sailfin tang
Niger Trigger
Blue throat Trigger
Diamond goby
algea blenny
Six Line wrasse
Purple Dottyback - died within the first 12hrs of being put in QT but he was looking bad sitting in the top corner of the DT before switch
Foxface
Hoeven's wrasse
Cleaner wrasse - died about 2-3 weeks into treatment, I think it died do to my cut back on feeding for the first few weeks (I feed once every two days)
Green Chromis x3
Bicolor Angelfish
Flame Angelfish
Allen's Damselfish
Zebra Barred Dartfish
Anthias (not sure what kind)

so the cleaner wrasse and blue hippo tang were the only two that died during the treatment(the Dottyback looked like it was on its way out before the swap) I think the cause may have been lack of food but that's just a guess.
All fish were eating just fine from start to finish(besides hippo due to shyness)

I have a ich outbreak I'm my DT that showed up yesterday. My question is this, I'm setting up a 210g (the sump from the 625g I got 1month ago) and possibly a 75g to put my fish into for treatment and also for the 12 wks my tank will be fallow. So can I not use RO water and just use a water conditioner, or will this affect the CP? Water conditioner makes cupramine deadly, what about CP or is there anything else I should be aware of? The only reason I don't want to use RO is it will take 36-40 hrs of my RO to fill up the tank(s) and I'm trying to get the fish into treatment today. Any help would be greatly appreciated, needless to say I'm feeling defeated...
