My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

Anyone have any thoughts about the new NLS Ick Shield Powder? Its supposed to be a chloroquine compound and the recommended dosage is 30mg/gallon for 8ppm concentration. Its supposed to be dosed once only for 21 days, needing replenishing only when doing water changes.

Not familar with the NLS ich Shield powder. I'm sure it's as good as most anything other than what comes from the pharmacy.

I'm giving it a try on several fish that had brook or were exposed to it. This may not be the best test for Ick Shield since I had already dipped them 4 times in formalin and all symptoms had cleared up. I was mainly concerned about continued use of formalin in the HTs so I did one last dip and then sterilized the tanks before transferring the fish back to the HTs.

You can add one more to the list that are suspect about the Ebay CP. I started my HT six weeks ago with one fish (blue face angel) remaining from velvet wiping out DT. I started at 80mg/g and two weeks later added some additional fish in. Everything was looking fine.
Last weekend I went out of town and came back to three dead fish. My wife kept them and it was obviously velvet (bloody sides). The remaining fish were breathing heavy especially the original blue face.
I bought CP from my vet and a compounding pharmacy at $80 for 16g. I put the fish in another HT and sterilized the old one. The blue face didn't make it- which really bummed me, guy had been a trooper and was a very mellow large angel, a rarity. The remaining two angels seem ok, though the appetite on the goldflake has diminished. CP had to be bad as the dosage was high and I had replaced equal amounts with each water change.
Only good news is that I was still running fallow on my DT and hadn't put these back in yet.

I have an update on my CP treatment for my velvet/ich treatment using the eBay source. After six weeks of treatment things seemed to be going pretty well. A few fish that had shown symptoms early on were doing well. Within a day or two of doing a large water change and a new dosage of cp I lost two wrasses and my regal angel stopped eating. Neither of the wrasses showed any symptoms. The regal did pass white stringy poop and held on for over a week before it died so I'm fairly certain it was an internal parasite. I'm not sure what to think on the wrasses. Reaction to the cp? I have several other fish including wrasses in my hospital tank that are still doing fine two weeks later.

Well i have an update on my Purple tang and ammonia situation. For the tang, after a week in my friends tank, he decided to start eating. Now he is back in my 75g QT looking better than ever and eats everything i throw at him. Actually, all the fish that i have left right now in that QT are looking and eating extremely well. As far as the ammonia, what i decided to do is get some Seachem Stability and also a bottle of BIO-Spira. I first got the Stability bottle and started dosing that daily until i got my BIO-Spira bottle which i dumped the whole bottle in. Within 5 days of doing all this, the ammonia badges both turned yellow and are staying that way. Looks like I was able to re-establish my bio filter using these 2 bacteria bottles. I guess those things really do work.

At this point now, i am in a waiting game for the DT fallow period to end, but i am still wondering if all these fish are clean. They have been in the QT tank since 8/27 and besides the ones that died, the rest now are doing great. Should i consider them clean?

i would think so, although observation of the fish is the only tell tale sign. i know that without question that the ebay source isnt great since i have treated i notice my clown and sohal tangs scratching again so i will retreat the tank with the ebay stuff again at a higher mg/gallon and see how that goes and will also retreat with the stuff from the pharmacy to be sure

Why not just retreat with the pharmacy grade?

Only because I have close to 10g of the eBay stuff left and instead of pitching it I'm probably going to use it, or maybe not now that you mention it... I'm trying to get my hands on a Mitratus butterfly at the moment before I start treatment again. Thus far I haven't had any luck for the past 4 weeks in locating one. I hope to have one next week, but that's what I thought for the past 2

What is everyone's opinion regarding using a protein skimmer while treating with CP? Has anyone successfully done it?

I've read this thread numerous times, great information in here. Thank you to everyone who has contributed. I recently went through a Velvet outbreak in my tank that wiped out 90% of my fish. I managed to save 5 wrasses with a formalin bath and started CP on them.
I acquired CP from the pharmacy in the forms of 250mg tablets. For anyone who has tablets, it contains fillers and binders so the actual chloroquine content is lowered. Mine says "Each tablet contains 250mg of chloroquine phosphate USP, equivalent to 150mg chloroquine base". I read through this thread and found info regarding the tablets.

In most cases, 250 mg tablets have an equivalence of 150 mg chloroquine base, and 500 mg tablets have an equivalence of 300 mg chloroquine base. Although the purity mentioned above is generally accurate, it would be best to verify the chloroquine base contained in the tablets of your choice in order to be able to properly calculate the exact dosage. Keep in mind if you decide to use the tablets, there are some inactive ingredients, which you may have to deal with, e.g., Camauba Wax, Colloidal Silicon Dioxide, Dibasic Calcium Phosphate, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Magnesium Stearate, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Polyethylene Glycol, Polysorbate 80, Pregelatinized Starch, Sodium Starch Glycolate, Stearic Acid, and Titanium Dioxide. And as mentioned earlier in this chapter there are occasions where some medicines are not in their pure form (100% pure), i.e., mixed with a substance called a 'carrier,' which should be noted on its label. If so its potency is reduced, and if not sure about the exact amount of medication needed, suggest contacting a more experienced aquarist for the way to resolve this situation".

I'd like to thank Humblefish for answering all my questions in my disease thread. The 5 wrasses are so far tolerating the CP well and eating. They have been in CP for 6 days now. Will update this thread and my own thread to let others know if fairy wrasses can tolerate CP.

sounds like i need to go back to the vet and get a script written out for 500mg tabs then

I believe the tablets are working fine. I read that some were experiencing cloudy water around the 10 day mark. So far it has been 6 days, I have not noticed any adverse effects of these added carriers. My water is still clear, although I am doing daily water changes and re-adding the addl CP to the new water. I'm hoping the cloudy water does not start to appear.
Fishes are no longer showing symptoms of velvet and are eating and swimming normally again.
Will continue to update this thread.

Has anyone used CP with Metronidazole and Focus? I noticed some white stringy poop and would like to mix metro/focus in their food to feed them.

I for one don't use a protein skimmer on my QT system so i can't speak to that

I PM'd alprazo about it and he said, "In theory, the protein skimmer will pull the CP out of solution." So, that's a good enough answer for me not to use one while treating with CP.

This is of huge importance to anyone who has used a skimmer during treatment since it (CP) was essentially rendered useless

It makes PP less effective when using in conjunction with CP so I would assume it would be the same but not 100% on that
