My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

Alprazo. Am I going to have biological filtration issues and ammonia and have to change water constantly. I just assume redose new water at 60mg per gallon if that case. If it's not do people redose anyway after like week with half dose???

I never redoes. If I do a water change, the Newley added water has CP in it. I still use a concentration of 40mg/gal because it is cheaper and effective for me.

Ammonia spikes seem to only happen in well established tanks with plenty of algae. I never had issues in QT tanks.

Alprazo,
How many times have you treated wrasses with CP? What was the survival rate?
Lost all my wrasses during the CP treatment. Not sure if it was due to the CP or a secondary infection.

Also, I bought the Dr. G's Caviar with CP in it. All my fishes ate it and spit it out. None of them liked it. It was a waste of money. Clowns, tangs, damsels, wrasses, and blenny hated it.

A Maori wrasse did fine. Hoevens wrasse I'm 0 for 3. In general I have always had open top tanks and stay away from fish that jump. Oh yeh, a cigar wrasse was in treatment and doing fine but jumped out.

It is nice to see a company selling a medicated food. Feeding chloroquine has it's problems though. In theory, it should help since it can be found in the slime coat of fish after ingestion. The difficulties are coaxing the fish to take the spiked food. Having tasted it, it is terribly bitter and metallic like. Having tried it in a fish food, the fish seem to respond the same way. It also probably would not eradicate the parasite from your tank, but may decrease the load and give the fish's immune system to ability to respond and provide a response. As described in its name, it may work as a shield on the individual fish eating it and not a treatment of the entire tank.

I do not recommend using your skimmer during treatment

I'm referring to the powder form you dose in the water, not the kind in the food

So I moved my red velvet fairy wrasse out of the cp tank and into a small 5g with an air stone. He is not moving much and has some white stringy poo hanging out. Going to try some prazi but he does not look like he will make it.

So i've read thru MOST of this very large thread. But i just wanted to ask some experts. I've been having an issue with my tank and lost 4 fish. not sure what killed them, I thought it was ich, then i thought velvet, now i'm thinking brook.. I really don't know. They showed signs of all of them. I have 5 fish left and want to treat with something that would take care of it ALL rather than multiple treatments and stressing them out more.. The fish are 3 dartfish, a lawnmower blenny, and a radiant wrasse. I've been reading that it seem wrasses do not to good at all with this treatment.. are their any success stories at all with it? Maybe prazi first and then CP incase something bacterial?

Also i could go the ebay route as some people have bought from a certain guy that seems to work. Or i have really easy and quick access to the new life spectrum ick sheild powder. the active ingredient is 1,4-Pentanediamine, N4-(7-chloro-4-quinolinyl)-N1,N1-diethyl- which seems to be very close to pure CP but not the same.. Any ideas? would it be best to just contact a vet and try to get pure CP?

Thanks

Follow up report. Its working great. Butterfly's are absolutely fine. No more dots eating well. They don't care about lights off at all. Probably so damn dark 450 ft anyway. I did have a small. 25 ppm ammonia spike today after about 5th day. Did a 30 per plus water change and replaced cp on new water. So weird this cp effects biological filter so late in process

I think the reason it affects bacteria so late is that it is an algacide and it takes 4-5 days to kill it all so hence the spike.

CP should sort out all of them, I have no experience with Brook though. Alprazo is the man when it comes to this med. I used ebay CP and had no problems with purity.

Not sure how many have used CP with Regals before but I had a Red Sea that was eating well and started CP (1/2 dose 1st day, followed by the other half the following day) the fish showed signs of stress yesterday evening and was dead this am. TT for me on any regal in the future...

I ran CP with a regal after a velvet outbreak. It did well for a few weeks but eventually stopped eating. It died about a week or two later. Can't say for sure if it was the CP or if there was another issue going on.

I called my vet to try to get some CP. She would not give it to me. She stated that legally she could be held responsible for fish deaths since she wrote the script. Also she was concerned about the disposal of the water. She did not want me dumping this water laced with this drug down our sewer and getting into our water supply. She also suggested I pay $100 and bring the fish in and get it scraped and fine out what exactly it has. And suggested I use Malachite Green for ich.

Where else can I get a pure form with out a script?

I used CP on a Regal with Velvet with 7 other fish, 5 died and only the Regal and a Lyretail Anthia FM survived. The Regal was the only fish that showed no effects whatsoever. Just luck of the draw I suppose.

Look back a few pages, someone had a online source that seemed legit. I just got the New Life Spectrum Ich Shield in the powder for and started using it 2 days ago.

please post the process of using the New Life Spectrum Ich Shield in the powder. I just got it and plan to work on the flame angel and wrasse. I'm afraid that the wrasse will have problem with it.

Sounds like you need to find a new vet. :)
