My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

This is of huge importance to anyone who has used a skimmer during treatment since it (CP) was essentially rendered useless

I am advising a LFS that wants to start using CP, but they are concerned about oxygenation treating 50+ fish at a time in a large system. Which is why they want to use a skimmer. I told them to use multiple powerheads pointing towards the surface to increase gas exchange.

Thoughts?

Has anyone used CP with Metronidazole and Focus? I noticed some white stringy poop and would like to mix metro/focus in their food to feed them.

I've never mixed CP with metro/focus, so I really can't say. But I did have a disaster one time (but only one time) mixing CP & Prazipro. Basically, mixing the two caused a bacterial bloom which led to oxygen depletion. Don't know if mixing CP with metro/focus would cause something similar to happen.

I have several large fish in a 210g, most of which are close to 8" and 4 more fish in a 75g hooked up to the 210g. return is provided by a mag 18 which feeds to the 75g and the 75 gravity feeds to the 210g. I also have the mag returning at the opposite end of the 210g (for circulation) along with two wp60's , only one of which is turned on and my fish aren't breathing heavily at all. the wp60 is on the lowest constant speed pointing toward the surface

Two days ago I noticed one of the wrasse having white stringy poop. Yesterday two wrasses stopped eating. Today, I just noticed that the two that stopped eating have their mouths constantly wide open. It's like they can't close it or something. The lips appear to be white also. They're hanging out at the top of the water, this isn't their normal behavior.

Anyone know what's going on???
I checked ammonia with API test kit and it read 0.

I also updated my thread with this question but hoping someone in here knew what was going on. Please help!!

Upon closer inspection, their mouths can open and shut but mostly stays halfway open. The mouth is swollen and white. Is this cotton mouth? Secondary infection from the CP? Anyone have any ideas?

I have to retract my previous statements that I believed my purple tang to still have crypto after the treatment period in my 700 gallon. I got mine from ebay seller jweage and did dose around 60-70mg/gallon in a display tank with live rock and sand. He recommends 40mg/g in the instructions and says it is a one time dose with no fillers. It also wiped out bryopsis, aiptasia, and caused a cycle (which I combated with a lot of amquel). I ran carbon for about a month after and algae has now returned to the rocks.

The purple tang does have two white spots on it's body but they have not changed and continue to stay in the same spot for weeks on end. Maybe lymphocysts or some other growths. It has an appetite but still not what it was before treatment as even a couple months of being off treatment I am still seeing it's spine. It will eat my blended seafood mixture regularly but just picks at seaweed whereas before it would devour it. I try to only feed the seafood mixture every 2-3 days.

Just wanted to share my experience with CP so far. Im treating 4 firefish and a red velvet fairy wrasse with a 40mg/g dosage. I broke it out to 3 doses, waiting a day in between each dose for observation. The final dose was last night, bringing me up to 2000mg, and the wrasse is eating and behaving normally so far. Feeding reef caviar.

And Thanks to HumbleFish for all your help as well!!

For cp in your qt, is the 21 day timer reset when you add new fish, or can you remove the old fish after 21 days and leave the new fish in till they complrte 21 days?

I'm using the nls powder version

Starts over or you remove the current fish, either way it's considered day 1

Update on my results thus far: My red velvet fairy wrasse has now lost his appetite completely. I ramped up the dose over 5 days to 10mg/l (40mg/g) based on 150mg chloroquine base for a 250mg tablet. The final dose was administered the night of 10/23. The wrasse was eating fine until the morning of 10/29, 6 days later, where he moved around but did not eat. This morning, he simply stayed put. Firefish are fine and still eating.

Any suggestions on next steps? Should I discontinue and switch to copper? None of the fish have ever presented signs of ich, not sure that matters but worth reiterating.

I would discontinue treating the wrasse with CP. When using CP and they stop eating the next step is usually death. I treated for 10 days for Velvet and had success so if you are treating "just in case" I would discontinue.

Having just put another 3 ich infected fish through treatment, I want to reiterate that I have never had a treatment failure (relapse) ich or velvet from CP purchased from a US human or Veterinary pharmacy. I have treated over 300 fish, though most were never infected. I have never exceeded the 40mg/gal or 10mg/l dosage.

I did have a failure from Canadian generic CP for human use.

My water does not turn cloudy, white, brown or and other color, even when I used malaria pills with binder.

Please keep this in mind when treating and consider your source for meds. Would you buy your own personal meds off EBay or an unaccredited company with no license to distribute pharmaceuticals? Healthy fish keeps your overall costs down and the initial investment saves heartache, frustration and despair when battling ich and velvet.

What's your thoughts on NLS ich shield powder?

It is nice to see a company selling a medicated food. Feeding chloroquine has it's problems though. In theory, it should help since it can be found in the slime coat of fish after ingestion. The difficulties are coaxing the fish to take the spiked food. Having tasted it, it is terribly bitter and metallic like. Having tried it in a fish food, the fish seem to respond the same way. It also probably would not eradicate the parasite from your tank, but may decrease the load and give the fish's immune system to ability to respond and provide a response. As described in its name, it may work as a shield on the individual fish eating it and not a treatment of the entire tank.

I do not recommend using your skimmer during treatment

Plain old cp for sale.? How they get around regulations. Scripts etc.

My take on this. The people selling unregulated CP are not licensed individuals. If the average Joe gets caught, they may fine you and tell you to stop. If a licensed pharmacist or company does it, they could lose their license and livelihood. I think that is why you are really only seeing it on eBay and maybe in infinitesimal concentrations in food and or combination meds. I have also seen it mislabeled. I believe for the same reason.
