My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

Honestly I have thought about putting a bunch of clove oil in my DT and waiting for him to go to sleep the do a big water change :fun2: on the plus side the small blue line and yellow head are doing well in CP were eating within a hr of being in the tank.

Go slow and I would wait until after CPto treat with PP, but that's just me

I thought I remembered a post from the OP of this thread that he has done the PP and CP at the same time with no ill effects many times. You ever though that is was just a coincidence that happened to you and that it would have happened with the PP regardless?

I just realized that the treatment of PraziPro is only 5-7 days. So I am just gonna wait the 3-4 weeks for the CP quarantine and then do the PP at the end before adding to my DT.

Humblefish is who had the issue, and people have done it before but typically PP first followed by CP seemed to work best since CP degrades PP I think? I'm never in a hurry to QT fish so another 2 weeks at the end is just a drop in the bucket to me

Well i'm on day 16 of treatment, lost my bristletooh a week ago and tonight i dont think my Moorish Idol will make it through the night. He was doing great and eating well and all of a sudden today, he looks very very week and wouldn't eat. I actually thought he was dead because he was just sucked up against the power filter intake and i moved him to get him out and he just started swimming again. He looks like he has some sort of red mark on his body, not sure if the power filter did that. Dosing another round of Cipro in the tank in case it is a bacterial infection due to the CP treatment.

I think in one particular instance for me mixing CP + Prazipro led to a "perfect storm".

It is already well known that prazi can cause oxygen depletion. Add to that the ethanol contained in prazi, which can fuel a bacteria bloom (which is why the water sometimes turns cloudy), and that bacteria uses up even more oxygen. Adding CP to the mix only made matters worse, and my fish were basically suffocating to death before I transferred them to my frag tank.

Now, this chain of events may be atypical... perhaps a 1-in-100 thing. It was the first time it ever happened to me after mixing the two meds many times. But I'll never do it again. I suggest anyone who does do it at least have a "backup plan" just in case your fish are suddenly laying on the bottom gasping for air.

Another thing i want to get some advice on is ammonia readings. I dont get why my seachem badge is showing an alert for it while my Salifert test kit consistantly tells my there is 0 NH4. Which one should I believe?

As expected, the Moorish Idol did not make it. That brings my total fish loss to 7, not sure what happened but he was doing well until yesterday. My water is cloudy and has been since beginning of treatment, is that normal using CP?

How old is the salifert kit? If it's fairly new I would believe that over the badge. Although that may explain why the MI suddenly looks bad, sounds exactly how I lost my small pyramid... 16 days into treatment and anything that could of died due to CP (bc it was a invert) should be long dead. Has the badge ever read ammonia then returned to yellow(no ammonia) do you have more CP? I might do a water change and see how the MI acts

The kit is not that old and it says it expires in 2017. That badge has pretty much read the same alert level since i put it in there. The MI has already passed away, all the other fish are fine, got 9 left in the tank.

How long have you had the badge in your tank? IME; sometimes it can take a few days for them to "settle in" and provide accurate readings.

It could just be the binder in the medication, or several other things. Could be a bacteria bloom. Have you mixed any other meds/water conditioners with the CP?

Its been in the tank pretty much since i set it up over a month ago.

No conditioners but I did add Cypro and Septra to the tank but the water was already cloudy before I added these.

That sucks man 7 fish lost, we have gone thru the same thing on this journey... The cipro is what I would suspect is giving you the problems with the fish and cloudy water?? You got the CP from the eBay guy right? I did this time around too, but I don't have cloudy water and haven't and just put a blue line angel and a yellow head butterfly directly into CP, floated and dropped and fish are eating and acting fine. I would think the CP isn't the issue. The water I am using with the system was from the hose outside with a water conditioner, so nothing special there. Top off water is with RO

Are you doing any water changes during the treatment? So you are using tap water and conditioner in the QT? Yes CP is from ebay source but I also had some from my pharmacy which i also used when i did a water change about 10 days ago. Water was cloudy way before i used Cipro so i dont think its that that is causing it.

So after going to the pharmacy to try and pickup the CP the vet wrote out for me I was informed that it would cost me 106$ for 50-250mg pills... That treats 250g.... Not cost effective. They ran some card they had and it will still cost me 76$... what?? I'm going to buy this by the kilo since that's the only economical way to do it. If anyone is looking for CP in the future I'm sure I will have some.

I did a 75g water change after I lost 6 angels in one day... Hose and water conditioner to refill , redosed appropriate amount of CP. Haven't done a water change again. Next Saturday I plan on doing a large water change

The $76 comes out to be a little over $6 per gram, which is on par with what a friend recently paid at a compounding pharmacy. But 50 X 250mg = 12500 mg of CP. So, using a dosage rate of 40mg per gal, you can treat 312.5 gallons with what you now have (if that's any consolation ;)).

Is it really that high, I thought it was closer to 3$ per G? Ok well then I feel better about it I suppose. The pharmacy only had 4 pills and none in the powder form so I will have to wait anyway
