My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

I used the same ebay seller on my 700 and qt tanks. The velvet and Ich cleared up within a week but my issues may have been relative to absorption or stopping treatment around 5-6 weeks on the 700. I also aded a 10" mata tang to my QT that came in with ich cysts 4 days ago and today it is almost completely clear of cysts. I'll know within a couple weeks if CP is stopping the ich cycle. It's a bare bottom with no skimmer and only ambient room lighting and pvc for hiding.

I am going to do some water changes and start running carbon to get the CP out and also start running the lights to get the fish back to normal eating, etc...The salifin actually looks a lot better now but i want to get them eating again. We'll see if they stay clean after i get the meds out and go from there, if i notice the parasite returning, i will start up dosing again or i may go copper route.

I'm doing a large water change and hanging lights over my QT system today. I will repeat treatment here in a month or so just to be sure everything is cleared up. I refuse to deal with this ever again

So i'm running a skimmer now and carbon and did a 20g water change and also running lights. Its amazing how much clearer the water is. How long does it take to get rid of all the CP? All fishes appetite still pretty low, they used to attack the nori i would give them now they dont even touch it for the most part.

Not sure about that, my fish never lost appetite. Even the blue line and yellow head I got a week and a half ago went straight into CP and were eating within 45 mins of being out of the bag

Light must have a significant affect because i have another tank a few feet away from the QT system that has a Quad T5 fixture and some of the light is bleeding into the QT tank. I noticed more ich cysts on my late moorish idol in my QT about 3-4 days ago so I dosed more CP. I went down this morning and found them covered in crypto cysts and black cysts and my moorish idol and a small tang had died. There has been an explosion of parasites in the last 36 hours as that's the last time I had checked on/fed them and had not seen a significant change at that time. All of the fish are now showing black and white cysts. I immediately did a 50% water change and started Prazi pro along with an initial dose of cupramine. I believe I have given up on CP for the time being.

Also I've started dropping the QT salinity gradually.

And the appetite suppression isn't immediate. In my experience is started around 3-4 weeks on in my 700. That tank still appears to be free of velvet however I did still have some crypto so I have been dropping the salinity to hypo levels to kick it.

I've been running lights, skimmer and carbon now for 5 days so i'm guessing CP should be out of my system now. Blue hippos still wont eat and its probably been almost 2 weeks since it last ate anything. Now, my purple tang wont eat either. I dont get what is happening. Why would a fish stop eating if it looks clear of any parasites? I fresh water dipped the blue hippo also, that did not help.

I'm at a loss for why your tangs won't eat. Did you try some garlic in the food? I just received a Sohal yesterday and put the fish in the same QT as the rest and it started eating last night after I put a little garlic on the food.

Yeah i've loaded up the tank with Garlic. You do realize that adding new fish to your QT starts the clock back to 0 again right? Did you ever catch your wrasse?

Yeah I know it starts over at 0, the fish will all be treated again with CP like I had mentioned in a previous post but that's easily overlooked. No the wrasse is still in the tank, I haven't had time to try and catch him. I think this wkend will finally be the wkend he comes out

Is it a common presumption or knowledge that ebay sources are no good?

If you read back thru this thread, it seems there were several failures when the CP came from an ebay seller. And I know at least one of the ebay sellers had gotten his supply from Fishman Chemical - and there has been problems with CP coming from them as well. I seem to remember someone saying the instructions from Fishman Chemical said to dose CP, wait X no. of days, do a WC, dose again... just total BS, as CP is a "one & done" treatment.

Most antibiotics kill the biological filtration in a tank. CP is one of the rare exceptions. I would guess it was the cephalexin.

Many antibiotics do not outright kill nitrification bacteria. They depress nitrification quite significantly.

Many do not stop nitrification 100% and many will recover after the antibiotic is gone.

I wonder if perhaps those instructions take into account that CP is degraded by light fairly rapidly.

That's possible. I just figured they were peddling something other than 99% pure CP - possibly diluted with fillers - to save $$$. And then trying to compensate for that by having the end user do multiple doses.

With the price of the stuff on eBay I would have to agree it's not 99.9% pure, on the other hand I do have to say the stuff works. The fish that I have without a doubt had ich don't anymore so the stuff works but not as well as stuff from the pharmacy I'm sure but I do believe it is pure enough to combat ich

Actually kill is too strong a word for many (most?) antibiotics.

Many will depress nitrification greatly, but often not quite or nearly 100%, and will recover when the antibiotics is gone.

Kanamycin, Erythromycin, neomycin are like this.

For folks looking to buy CP,

I had successfully purchased from the vet mentioned on this thread & I also bought from Alfa Aesar, a pharmaceutical company.

I had absolutely no problem from Alfa, i'm also in Canada and this shipped across the border with absolutely no issues.

It may seem expensive, at least you know you are getting quality.
