My LFS seller was wrong about clownfish

I told them I already had 2
1 adult and 1 baby

I bought $120 worth of baby clown fish(7) yeah I know rip off maybe.....

But the seller said they would fight to the death.

So I acclimate them to the tank and no fighting at all.

They are instant buddies and the adult clown seems or felt right at home and loves to swim with the babies when in school formation and when scared they group together.

I can agree perhaps if I bought just 1 or 2 babies they might fight but a whole school I think confuses dominance issues and you just gotta play along.
Ok here is the picture! Oh yeah I know it looks dirty.....

No fighting.. How long have you had them? I guarantee you 9 clowns will not work in a 55 gallon tank. Clowns aren't schooling fish. Its just not going to work over a long period of time. I don't think.

I fear when a couple of this lot reach sexual maturity it's going to be a problem.

I just bought them today.

Added bonus with so many babies is that my foxface is not a skittish baby anymore and very calm.

Once they start establishing territories it will get rough. The dominant fish will keep the more submissive fish in hiding or stuck in a corner somewhere. It won't be pretty.
For once, I agree with what someone at an LFS said. LOL.

Clowns will not fight until they mature. You never see groups of juvenile clowns fighting because there is no need to. Once they mature and the fight for dominance begins you will see problems. Its just how it goes. You will end up with only a few left. Your LFS employee was right. Thats also gonna be a lot on your bio-load, and with the algae growth i see already its gonna be rough.

weluvfish54 - Having 10 clowns for a year without fighting is no achievement. Clowns live 20+ years, one year really doesnt mean much.

I wanna see where this goes........ I don't think having that much clown in a tank is nice anyways even if they get along. it's nice to have a variety of fish, just my opinion though.

Not as long as you may think.

They may be okay for days, weeks, maybe months, but a dominant pair WILL develop, and the rest will suffer for it. If you keep all nine clowns in this tank, you're condemning at least seven of them to live a life of fear, and for most it will cost them their lives.

And for what?

did i say it was an achievement? no. i simply stated my experience..and being that i had 7 tanks at the time, if (and if) they did fight, id seperate them out ;)

Just curious, why buy that many clownfish?

To keep the landlord happy.

She wants it..... She gets it.

Well, then you should have your landlord read this thread. Most of us are telling you that you are condemning these fish to their death. Maybe not today, or even next week or month but that surely will be the outcome.

you can get off your soap box, read clearly THEIR NOT TOGETHER RIGHT NOW :)

Need to relax. Peggy ( Skippy2 ) was referring to the OP.

:rolleye1: I'm not on a soapbox.

Thanks Todd. Sometimes I really wonder when I (we) try to help someone with our collective experience that just because people don't like to hear what we say, get so defensive.

be prepared to take them back to the LFS. When they get older u will see heaps of fighting. I had 4 in my 20 gallon and now i have 3, cuz i had to take one back, and now im just praying for a trio. So far no fighting.

You know, I remeber when I first signed on here arguing how I had maroons and occs together for a whole 3 months and no prob, and all the exp reefers didn't have a clue.
One guy simply said,"check back w/ us in a few months"
Sure enough, came home to dead occs, and a badly scarred maroon.
Wish I had sense enough to listen back then.
But hey, your way is good too.
Check back w/ us in a few months.
