My Lighting Bake-Off

What ..... they're not good enough for you now! BTW, camera is not the problem .... it's the fancy lenses. Got too many expensive hobbies already, photography ain't about to be another one  (even if I was actually interested).

Green 'pops' more perhaps, but it's more of a deep, verdant green under the MH. Six to one .....

Wait... if I add peanut butter to my tanks, will all of the green corals disappear? How did I not know this before? Creamy or Chunky?

FWIW, I'm English ..... We hate peanut butter ..... Marmite perhaps.

Everyone's a critic; I shall attempt to take some close ups this weekend.

Curious culinary concoctions aside .....

1. I am consistently seeing better poly extension on the MH side of the tank. Not that the LED side lack PE, it's just better of the MH side.
2. Encrusting of the base is also faster on the MH side. I have a bonsai SPS that started out as two comparable pieces, and the MH side is easily double the size, and the polyps are greener. Underlying purple color is poor on both (though it is fine in the main display - dunno why.
3. Purple monster frag on the MH side died, again not sure why. Frag on the LED side is fine.
4. Certain corals look better on the MH side (in my opinion) - green slimer, bonsai, purple digita, blue tort; others look better under LED - pink and ponape birdsnest, chalices, setosa

A hearty thanks to JDA for sending along a few frags for the grand experiment (even though FEDEX tried to bollocks the thing up :(). BTW this weekend is SPS colony thinning time in the display. I've put it off for too long, and some have just become too large and are suffering for it.

I believe the acro on the MH side look better... seem to be encrusting and growing much more. The color looks great under your MH setup too.

I have noticed that too. Monti's and birds nests looked great under my Kessil setup, moved to MH and T5 and they look bland and lost color. My Acros, on the other hand, all look to have deeper colors and look awesome. Funny how that works...

Haven't seen any color rendition index (CRI) numbers on my LED fixtures, but I do think the corals look more natural under MH. Some people seem to want to have their coral 'pop', but I much prefer a more natural appearance. I will say that the Kessil LED spots have that same character as long as you don't push the blue too much.

How is the experiement coming along? Below is a photo of the no-name, generic frags that I sent along with the Pearlberry if you want them for reference.

I am calling it Vihn Diesel, since it looks a bit like Gonzo's Blueberry Diesel and a bit like RR The Vihn only with creamier branches. I know that you hate expensive named frags, but this one is just named and it did not cost anything. :)

I have this one in three different places and it looks different in each one. This is about 350 PAR out in the open between a pair of 14K Phoenix.

Hey chaps, sorry for the crickets. Been traveling a lot for biz, and most distracted by my new tank build. Not much to report - things mostly just slowly growing. I'm getting this weird macro algae growing in the frag tank. Almost looks like big beige balloons (not bubble algae) with a parchment like texture.

Vihn frags went quite pale on both sides; not bleached or dead, just very pale. PB growing on both sides, but well short of being colonies.

Names are ok. As the great American bugs bunny would say: if you can't beat 'em; join 'em! Or maybe it was YS who said that. Clearly time for a Loony fest.
