Atomikk, I don't doubt you have a very nice tank. I've never stated to the contrary. I've seen pictures of your corals in your posts, and they're some of the most colourful I've seen. All I said was I felt your foxface was a little skinny. It wasn't to insult you or your tank, but just as an example, as fishfeeding was the topic of this thread at the time, and that pic was the 1st that came to my mind. It's just my opinion that skinny fish are less likely to fight off disease or recover from trauma. You may disagree with that. You can tell me my fish are fat. It won't bother me one bit, and I won't take it as an insult to the magnificense of my tank. I'm sure you do care greatly about your livestock as I do myself. I do view my tank as a living ecosystem, and I do understand very well you and nanoreefoholics points and philosophies, I just dont agree with them 100%. I just feel they're too cut and dry, too narrow in scope. I think there's more leeway, more to know and more to understand. I can accept that we disagree.

Hey Goodwin9 - great thread and great tank. Bit of a long read though!!! I would love to see a system this large with so many fish. While not the style of system I personally maintain, I really love viewing tanks with lots of fish as the life they bring to the environment is truly amazing. A great collection of fish you have put together.

And don't mind those crazy Canadians causing trouble again in your thread. As others have implied, I tend to agree that many Canadians seem to have gone to the same school of reefkeeping... After reading this thread I think few would argue that you do not posses the experience, intellect, commitment, passion and financial resources to ensure this system is successful (no matter what country you live in). Good luck with it and keep us updated. 250

Great tank 250G. love all the sps. I've got a spare 120 gallon in my garage that I was thinking of setting up as an sps tank.

Three new clams today. 2 more large Derasa's for a couple of local people and a new Gigas for me with blue and green spots.

You know those gigas get freakin huge right? The last one I saw in Steve Weast's tank was like 3 feet.
If & when it gets that big, I will ship it off to you.... How fast do they grow?

interesting article on nitrites and their toxicity.

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-06/rhf/index.php

The interesting part is the difference between fresh and saltwater fish and their tolerances to nitrites. The author mentions how little evidence their is for the toxicity of nitrites in marine organisms. I have found the same in my searches of the journals in regards to the toxicity of nitrates. The real culprit appears to be ammonia. The negative effects of nitrites and nitrates on marine life in our aquariums at the levels we keep them at appear to be unsubstantiated. As I mentioned earlier in this thread I believe the rules of freshwater aquarium have been blindly applied to marine aquarium keeping with little evidence or scientific testing. If anyone can find some meaningful journal articles on the toxicity of nitrites and nitrates in marine aquariums (not agricultural run off) please post it, I'd be interested in reading them. What are your guys thoughts on this?

hey goodwin9, how deep is the sandbed in your display 600 gallon?
It varies quite a bit, from very little at the front of the tank in the center, to 3 or 4" towards the rear of the tank.

not real fast...I wouldn't worry about it for a couple of years!
gosh...you had me worried....

I took a couple of pictures of the new Gigas, the first one, taken from the top of the tank looking down, the spots appear to be green. In the second photo taken from the front of the tank, they appear blue.

yeah clams are so cool and it's always amazing how different they are from above. Looks like you still need to work on yoru water parameters. Have you been using GFO?

Yes, I have, in fact, I added a second Phos reactor to the system to help reduce.

250G..Your tank is gorgeous! I had visions of a nice looking SPS tank when I first started this project. My lack of knowledge, and patience for growing SPS, along with the number of fish in the tank, will probably prevent that from ever happening. My reef is just going to go in a different direction. Thank you for your input!
