My new 600 gallon reef

The new bulbs for my mangroves arrived today in good shape and unbroken. I didn't realize what they actually look like. Fluorescent bulb inside a traditional reflector housing. Now I am going to have to go and get some sockets to screw them in and I will be set. I think that I am going to put the bulbs over half the remaining mangrove and see if the develop leaves faster than the other half. Looking at the results Marc has had, I expect that they will sprout some leaves.

Home Depot sells a spring clamp light kit for $5 each. You don't need nor want the aluminum housing, so just set those aside. If you clamp them to something nearby, keep an eye on them over time as they do rust. I ended up getting rid of all the metal hardware, only using the socket and cord over my refugium. Each light hangs from a hook screwed into the underside of my stand.

I lost the Achilles over the night. I never was able to see who was picking on it, but this photo taken Wed afternoon shows the beating it was taking. Tried to net it out of the tank a couple of times, but just couldn't get it. I am assuming that it was due to it's size being the second smallest tang in the tank. The fish looked very healthy when it arrived.

bummer. that's wy I use the QT tank. Sometimes it back-fires but using a QT tank can help you get the fish' strength up for introduction into the display. I also NEVER release when the lights are on.

Did you mean to say cheveron instead of Achillies?
Thank you, it was supposed to be Chevron.

Chuck what about a tank within a tank for the new fish...that is what we do in public aquariums. They can see, smell and interact but not kill new fish....leave in there 2 weeks then introduce at night with lights off. This would work for your 2 larger tanks. Have a 12"wide buy 36" long buy 12 inches high, have slats in it for maximum water exchange...have 2 tunze magnets for mounting to side of tank....just a thought, but that is from a know nothing washed up aquarist who could not hack it....

EXCELLENT IDEA! Glad to see that your still watching. I wonder what Marc would charge to build such a tank?

You need to cut yourself some slack...IMO the demise of the store wasn't your fault. I wish Marc had time to post pictures from his trip to SF and show some of what you did for that store.

Sorry to hear about that Goodwin. Do you plan to get another one in time?
I will probably look for a replacement, but this time it will go into a different tank. It was too small in this tank and wasn't able to hold it's own.

Sorry to hear chuck! Hope the others make it.

3 tangs for $65.00?? Did you con one of the puppy people to bag them up and tell them they were damsels? I've NEVER gotten three fish of any type for $65.00 locally.

So when do I need to move salt? :D

The three that I picked up at Mini are all small. The littlest is less than 2". (not much bigger than a Damsel) So they were all put in the frag tank. I won't be placing a salt order until it goes on sale next month.

Well, the mangroves continue to grow roots, but no leaves, so I reorganized them with the help of some egg crate and added the lights Marc recommended so now I will wait and see what happens....

Trigger Systems makes those beautiful isolation tanks that fit in your main display for new arrivals. Because he has a CNC router, they look amazing.

All of your mangroves are exhibiting growth. What is their water source? Is that just a vat of water, or is that replenished with reef water often? Any flow down there? Sand? All of those tips look green and healthy, so it should be a matter of time like Jonathan pointed out.

There was an article about mangroves:
