My new 600 gallon reef

Chuck, some of these salts are also available in much larger bags for commercial operations. You've really got to do some research on this because I think you can do much better than what you are dealing with right now. Buckets take up so much space, and while they can be useful, once you have 50 laying around it gets to be a real PITA.

I have yet to source the large bags just because the boxes are easy to come by here, but it may be worth your effort.

I missed your question about the mangroves. Sorry! I don't have any current pictures of them but I am lighting them with a T-5 array:

What I did was to fill the left end with mostly sand and plant them there. I had them in my refugium (50g Rubbermaid), but they grew too tall. I first tried a couple of the lights Marc uses but that didn't go well, mostly because of the size of my fuge. Then I installed an NO lamp over-driven with an IceCap 660:

That's when I first put them in. Then they grew above the lamp and I moved them to the grow-out tank. So far I have not been sucessful at making new ones using the shoot method, but I try once-in-a-while anyway.

LOOKS LIKE THE CLEANER IS ON THE JOB TOO! :)
For supposedly being a disposable wrasse, I have had this one in the tank for over a year. It has made it through the worst of times and still manages to hang in there.

You lost me, Jonathan. What is an NO lamp? It looks like a regular florescent fixture. What is the K rating of the bulbs? Are they T5, T8, T12?

Chuck, I have two of those cleaners and they have been great for eating whatever I put in the tank and harassing fish until they nearly get eaten. I would NOT have put them in if my cleaner shrimp were not being killed off.

NO= Normal Output

Those are T-12 lamps, 6700K.

Made the mistake of stopping by the LFS and couldn't help but pick up a few tang that they received by accident. They didn't know the names of 2 out of the three. Anyone, (tangdiver or cougarman) have any idea what these are? The boss wasn't at the store and people in the store didn't have a clue as to what it is.

First one, it's maybe 3" at the max, nice pattern, thought that it might be a Dussumier, but when I got home and looked at the two that I currently have, this fish doesn't look the same.

My first though was Dussumiere, then I thought Bariene but it doesn't really like any of those. Hmmmm........

This tang they said was a ring tail blochi (sp). It's a little over an inch. Tough to get a good picture as the lights are off and this guy is shooting all over the tank.

QUESTION for all of the MATH people out there;

My Clown tang is doing laps in the tank. If it is swimig the length of the tank, lets say 9 feet then 3 feet to the back, then another 9 feet to the other end and 3 feet back to the front. I have timed it's laps and it is traveling this path in 12 seconds.

Can anyone tell me how fast it is swimming? For some reason, it has been doing this most of the day. Check out the cam and it still may be swimming the laps. Just curious what that distance equals speed. (I was never very good in math)

Distance would be 2 feet per second. 2 feet equals .00037878 miles so that would give you .00037878 miles per second. Take that times 60 seconds in a minute equals .0227268 miles a minute. Take that times 60 minutes in an hour equals 1.363608 miles per hour.

The first one is a Xanthopterus. Probably the most aggressive fish I have. They also get huge fast, so look out Goodwin9 if you're going to add new fish to the same tank. Mine was 3 inches last winter and now is close to 6 inches. A local fish store has one thats about 18 inches and was grown in a 180 gallon. The second is definately a juvenile Maculiceps, I also have one of these and he's starting to get his blues stripe behind his eye. A nice find by the way. The third looks to be possibly a mata tang, that would be my guess, although the shape of the mouth looks a little different. Part of the fun though is watching them grow and change.

probably just got to the end of your punch card Chuck. :lol: I get a free coffee now-and-then too.

Did you see that LA dropped the price on the Gem Tang down to $2800?

Gosh, I hope not. Guess you can find deals other than on the internet...

$2800 is still too rich for my blood. As much as I would like one, it is going to have to drop a heck of alot more.
