The Fowleri will have a characteristic blue horseshoe behind the gills. By the way, my camera sucks.

Is it possible the coloration changes as the fish grows larger?

Great pics Goodwin. Where did you get those zoas from?

Cougarman is that clown trigger in a reef? If so how is that going?

Going well so far. he's still the little guy in the tank. Doesn't bother the reef,. Doesnt bother the other fish. They say it cant be done, but I've never been one to follow the rules.

I dont think so man. I've seen them as small as 3 inches and they look almost the same as an adult. The one in the pic is about 8 inches.

Cougarman...need help in refreshing my memory as to the type of tang??

Acanthurus xanthopterus. They call it a yellow masked tang up here. I've found mine to be extremely aggressive. Probably my most aggressive along with my bristletooth.

A LFS has one that is close to 24 inches. It lives in their shark tank. biggest captive tang I've seen. They said it was grown in a 180 gallon, then donated to them.

I had this fish in my frag tank with a couple of other fish. I added the mimic and this fish went nuts, so I thought that I would show him and threw him in the big tank. All of a sudden, he wasn't top dog and has the scars to show for it. Maybe....this one has learned it's lesson????

I did something similar, and my striatus bristletooth kicked his butt a little bit. But now 6 months later, the xanthopterus is bigger and is a nightmare when I add fish. I'm considering removing him before I add my fowleri to the display.

Love the tangs Chuck. Strange that my striatus bristletooth is a sweetheart.

Sweetheart. Wow. Mine's far from that. Actually the dealer I got him from says he stopped imorting them a few yrs back because they are so aggressive. I asked him if he'll take mine back. he said no returns after 5 yrs. LOL

around here, there are no returns period!

Mine behaves quite well, and in fact, they all (my tangs) really are pretty mellow. Just the occassional tiff but it's very rare and all of the fish are wound free. I guess it could just be a space or food thing.

I remember one time when Weast was over he mentioned that his tangs always had scars on them from rough-housing and rock scrapes. I have yet to see that in my system. The most commotion in my tank comes from the love/hate relationship between the cleaner wrasses and the rest of the fish. I can't believe they are still alive. But they are extremely QUICK fish. Must be an evolutionary adaptation. :D

In general my tangs are civil to each other, but if I add a new tang, depending on the species and size, then the Bristletooth and the xanthopterus, are the 1st to harrass and the only ones that actually will inflict wounds. After a couple days things settle down. I'm thinking of trying the tank within the tank method that was suggested to goodwin9. I have some extra acrylic lying around that I could use for it.
