Cougarman, What is a sawtail? A tang, I'm guessing. Which one from the image above?

Its the one above the black Tang with the two stripes. I think they are a subfamily of the Tangs like Unicorns and Acanthurinae. If I remember correctly Goodwin9 got it by mistake when he ordered a Mustard tang. He got lucky if you ask me. I've never seen them in captivity, good thing too, I dont have much more room for any more fish in my tank. I'm not sure why they're not imported. I guess there's no demand for them.

love it when you chime in. I learn from you every time. I would give you some serious + karma points if I could! :D

Thanks. I really don't know but a few tangs. I tend to focus on the ones I want to keep, and don't commit to memory any of the rest.

Can you direct me to any good pictures of these?
Hey Goodwin9,

I just got back to your thread.... I have seen those red shrooms in person before at an aquaculture facility I worked at many times.

Here is a great link with more info, however in this article Julian identifies them in the Rhodactis family, with the same species name:

You'll see some green"ish" ones in the second set of pics. The bubbles on your reds will grow larger, but I've never seen the red ones' bubbles' get as large as blue-greens. I believe Sprung and Delbeek have this coral in Volume One of their series, so I'll look into that when I get home too.

Also, here is a link to a recent thread ran on my local reefing forum with some great info in it:

Hey Goodwin9. Have you ever considered introducing some Bergia Nudibranches. They feed exclusively of aptasia. Supposedly you can get them to breed in captivity. Neat little guys. There is a breeder near here who also ships to the states.

I've ordered a few. I'm gonna see if I can get a population going in my refugium which has hundreds of aptasia.

I'm afraid that they might be sucked into the over flows. Right now this is what I am using...

Ya copperbands the best IMO. Keeps my display aptasia free. I'm not suggesting you put berghia in the display, but maybe in a refugium or in a small tank inline. You dont necessarily have to have them to solve a problem but just for fun. I have literally thousands of aptasia in my refugium. I dont consider them a problem but actually part of the biofiltration. Some times I scrape them off and feed them to the copperband, or just discard them as a method of nutrient export. I'm kinda thinking the Berghia could feed on the aptasias and if I can get them to breed, their offspring coud become a source of food for the inhabitants in the display tank. Have a sort of cycle going.

I also have a ton of little white starfish. They eat the algae which is great, but I was thinking of getting a few harlequin shrimps and seeing if I can sustain a population of them since they feed exclusively on stars. Just trying to increase the diversity of my system.

good luck with the berghia...that was an expensive failure for me! I am looking for a replacement CBB but it takes quite a while to find one around here that is the right size.

What happened with your berghia? Did they just die, or was it something else?

well, part of it was my inexperience I think, but I could not keep them alive. I had hoped to breed them as well, but like every other anti-aiptasia experiment, it crashed and burned.

A little disappointed in the size of the recordeas that I purchased last week. I found a couple of divers that offered to send me some in a variety of colors. WOW, I couldn't believe it when I opened the boxes...

These were taken just minutes after I started acclimating them to the water. Can hardly wait for them to open up....

Oh man - those are beautiful!

Do you have any full grown recordeas in your tank? Can you post a pic or two of what they look like 'fully grown'?

Thanks, Itay.

Sorry, but I don't. I'm looking forward to see how well I can get these to do in the tank. A couple of mushrooms that I thought were ricordeas in my tank, are nothing like this batch I just received.
