My New H. Magnifica Anemone!

Thank you for the encouragement! So far everything is still good. It looks to be lifting up most of it's oral disc now, so we're almost in good shape again. I watch it CONSTANTLY just in case.

And I got to see this for the first time after lights out tonight! One of my favorite poses!

Please excuse the night-time phone camera quality.

I to love the look of the balling up thing mine does this as well sometime . The fact that it holding up its oral disk is a great thing . mine seams to hold up all most all the time . so whats up with the Blue tang is that were it sleeps ?

Yea... He's a little special. I got that top rock specifically for the Mag, and the next day after I added it he started hiding under it whenever he was scared or bored. He sleeps there at night also, as you see. I thought he'd move on when I added the Mag, but he seems oblivious to the potential disaster. He even swims in and out through the tentacles during the day. I decided he must be an adrenaline junkie or something. That, plus his mohawk style dorsal fin, is why I chose to name him "Spike". :)

well that crazy well lets hope spike does not try and sleep with his clown friends . Please keep us posted about your mag

Ha, we won't. I'm up to four now, and looking to add a fifth next week. :D We should probably start a Mag Addicts Anonymous group or something.

They look really good! Hopefully they'll settle in and not crowd each other too much. I love adding a new one and watching how my clowns react. It's like adding another wing onto their mansion or something. :lolspin:

Edit: Eugh, and now the other side of being a mag hoarder. I just started dosing vodka recently and my tank became cloudy shortly after lights on. I was thrilled that I was having a bacteria bloom so soon. Then I looked over and saw one of my mags expelling white clouds. The mags are spawning. That's not bacteria clouding the water!

HMAA. I like it! And you've really got me beat. I feel sad that I've never seen any pictures of this gathering. :)

My clowns were on it before it had even set its foot! I've never had a nem as sticky as this one either. I had to hold my hand against the rock and wait for it to let me go, because there was NO way to wiggle free of those tentacles. I agree, I hope they don't crowd each other, but I also kind of like the look they have in that pic. As long as they're happy, so am I.

Hahaha! Just be glad it was only one! Imagine if all 4 of them spawned together!!! :crazy1:

Well I wish I could say everything was going well, but apparently they played "king of the hill" night before last.

The new one climbed the back wall, but still looks healthy, and the original couldn't be happier. I'll give it a couple days to find a rock, but if it sticks to the glass for too long, I'll have to move it myself. Fortunately, I have a place in mind, I just need to add some more flow.

Thanks for the compliments! I really don't want to move the new one, but it's not going to be happy on that glass for long. I'll definitely watch the powerheads, though. And I can't add more clowns. My tank is only a 210g, so they'd be fighting in no time.

Bradley,
The moving nem is looking for better conditions, IE more light and more flow. Create an area with high light and higher flow, and it will stop moving.

Dont move it on your own.

Dont add a pair of clowns, they will only stress out an anemone that is already unsettled.

Nick, are you suggesting that I try to create those conditions on the glass? I don't intend to move it off the rockwork, but I am not comfortable trying to make it settle where it is in that picture. The best place for it, IMO was where the first H. Mag settled, but apparently the two Mags are not compatible. The second best place (pictured above) has good lighting, and a good precipice for it to perch, but I will need to increase the flow. And unfortunately that place is 4 feet away with a powerhead pushing against the direction of the nem traveling to there.

I wasnt suggesting trying to create those conditions on the glass, rather that you not mess with it while its trying to get acclimated. If you have an ideal spot but it is a lengthy distance with the chance of being sucked into a powerhead to get there, then I'd move it.

I reccomend using an old credit card or something similar to gently slip between the foot of the anemone and the glass. Take your time, dont rush and tear the foot. In a healthy anemone, a small tear in the foot is no big deal, in an unhealthy anemone, it can be fatal.

I've had to remove anemones before, so I know exactly what you are talking about. And I am in no hurry to move it, but if it stays up on the glass for more than 4 days I will move it, only because its health will decline in those conditions.

Thanks for your advice, I know you have a lot of experience to share on anemone care. :)

Good luck with the second mag, i'm looking for a healthy red one to add to my purple base.....it might just take me a while

I had a huge mag with true percs and a huge gig with b/w ocel in my 180 for 1 and a half yrs and they never fight. (Huge=12+ in) they wont leave the nems to fight lol

My Female Percs will swim as much as 12 inches away from the anemone. The males will only travel about half that.

I would bet money you would be fine with two sets of clowns in a 210 as long as they were separated by about 36 inches or so.

But I would absolutely wait for a minimum of month, preferrably longer to add a second set of clowns until the newest H.mag is acclimated, eating normally, and the mouth isnt gaping any longer.

Hmm. I was thinking a pair of "Spotcinctus" for my BTA at the left end of the tank. That's about that far. So maybe I can do that in a few months? Thoughts?

***Time for an udpate***

The nem had kept it's mouth closed this whole time, but it started to gape yesterday so I moved it the peak I showed above. Apparently it doesn't like my choice, so the next morning...

It's very happy there, even if I'm not. Mouth closed, fully extended and inflated...
