My new score-two blue gigs.

D-Nak, thoughts on cod filets once the Gigs get healthy?

My food of choice for my gig is salmon soaked in Selcon. Salmon is a good natural source of Omega-3 fatty acids, and also has Astaxanthin which helps with the red color -- my gig is mauve so I was trying to bring out the red tones. I don't know it if works, but it's just an added benefit of feeding salmon if it does do anything. Clown fish breeders often times feed their babies Astaxanthin to bring out the reds and oranges. I also like wild salmon since I can usually find it fresh, and we just eat it for dinner and I cut the edges off for the gig.

My guess is that cod should be fine, as long as you keep it small, the size of a pencil eraser. But it won't have the nutrional benefits of salmon that I mentioned above.

Also, keep in mind that farmed salmon contains Astaxanthin, but not in natural form. Krill and other arctic shrimp also contain Astaxanthin -- actually at much higher levels than salmon -- but the gig will need to digest the shell, which can be avoided with salmon. And again, this is purely anecdotal in my part, so take it with a grain of salt.

I feed my anemone both farm raised and wild caught salmon with no ill affect. I use a hypodermic needle and inject the Selcon into the flesh of the food and not worry about soaking it. You can get insulin syringes without prescription.

ok guys, will do next time, should have ask the question how to feed the gig before I fed them. Thanks for your thoughts.

Please don't feed your nems silversides. There are far better options available, and I'd hate to see you lose a nem from a bad silverside.Keep the food size down -- just feed small particles -- until your nem has time to fully acclimate and gain some zoox back. The smaller the particle the better at this point, since the nem doesn't have to work as hard to digest it. It's already working on building back up its zoox population, there's no need to compound the issue.

Great advice. +2

2/11/13 pics update, how does the nem look guys?

Can I ask how much you guys are paying for these gigs? Please send me a PM if you're willing to disclose.

Looking great there Peter!! I just posted some updated pictures my brother just took with a nicer lens here.... You can see the tentacle length very greatly increasing and looking more like a carpet everyday. It's real cool...

The mouth in the last picture looks real nice and tight, that's a great sign. Good luck and keep updating us!

thanks Tom, very nice pic of your great gig, that is one huge and giant nem. Beautiful colors now and I can see how he is getting the hues back. Are you feeding it salmon?

Not yet. Hoping I don't have to. Yours are exhibiting nice coloring! I'm just not a good pic taker.:headwally: LOL He's been eating frozen shrimp and squid.

It is coming along, still has a bleach look to it, the others are recovering and accomodating but hopefully they will really grow to their potential soon like yours, thanks. Frozen small shrimps or frozen shelled shrimp because that would be pricey, squid is cheap though.

I get a seafood mix from an oriental food store. They're pieces of shrimp, squid, octopus, mussel, and scallops. There are some pieces in there he won't eat. I think they're the mussels.

frcforce327,
He is looking great. What I see of the tank and the clowns looking good as well.

+1 on that comment. Looks like my Gig when it begins to color up a little more... Looking forward to seeing progress on yours as it goes along!
