solRNY, I was thinking of letting my kids swim in it during the water test, but I'd hate to think what would happen if they bumped the bulkheads, or kicked the glass. . .

You have to Nate. I think that would be amazing, maybe put like a floaty in there for them just to show how large the tank is.

Had a bunch of stuff come up recently that has kept me away from the forums, and tank build; but happy to say I'm back at it. Worked on the tank last night for the first time since I posted the photo above - enlarged some bulkhead holes that were too small, cut the acrylic for the overflow, etc.

Also, drew this sketch to show the aquascaping, lighting, and plumbing plans:

Brown is live rock, blue is LED "modules", rest is various plumbing. Basically, I'm trying to create "islands" surrounded by wide open space, and plenty of light/dark contrast, rather than stuff it with rock from edge to edge and blanket it with boring, uniform lighting.

Excellent progress!! What else do you have left to do before putting it in place and getting it started?

Glue in the overflow (the acrylic is already cut), build the stand. Then, move the tank in, build the hood, sheetrock it all and paint. Then, finish electrical and plumbing, and build/install the lighting.

Since it's in the middle of the house, I have to keep the "transition time" as short as possible, hence I'll be putting the tank in and buttoning it all up, THEN doing support systems (lighting, plumbing, electrical). I'd rather work on that stuff before the sheetrock goes up, but I don't want my house to look like a construction site for two months.

Also need to wet cure my DIY live rock.

And, need to build out the sump/filtration.

I was originally hoping to have it running with saltwater and mostly finished around July/August, but I'll probably miss that by a month or two at this rate. No biggie. I'm enjoying the process.

WOW! that is fannnntassstic, and it looks great!
there seems to be an effect from that one pic looking thru the glass the water seem to go on beyond the tank :) or that your tank is just that big!

That's looking through the small viewing panel on the back of the tank, towards the full-sized panel on the front of the tank, which is 4' away.

If you look near the bottom of the water (i.e. underwater) you can see the frame for the front viewing panel. Look back and forth between that and the water surface and the section of the frame you can see above water and it's like a mind trick. :D I hadn't noticed the illusion of distance but it IS kinda cool. Look at the hose, too. You can see it above water inside the tank, above water outside the tank, a reflection above water, and below water. The below-water view of the hose doesn't even come close to lining up with the above-water view.

Weird stuff when you've got lots of reflection and refraction in the same photo!
