My Ultimate Multi Mantis System(s)

Well its not like your publicly advertising that your collecting live critters and then providing pix of them in your home system or anything...........
SHHHHhhhhhhhhh:D

How did Megatron not get injured in this video I will never know. Looks like the crab got a hold of him a couple times. But I do have to say with this new background and foreground set up you really do get to see the full destructive habits of the mantis. Bravo on a well thought out display.

Megatron did get grabbed a few times ;) but I guess you could say this individual is kind of really like Megatron the Decipticon.....He just keeps coming back o.O!

If you are worried about any of them getting injured by crabs you could break the larger claws of the crabs so it is a bit safer

No...

This would not only be against the entire purpose of the filming but I would get even more back lash from what I get already...

I willing put the 2 together as unharmed as possible and am more then prepared to pay the ultimate price should an actual crab kill a Stomatopod...

Having said this it's been a few years now and thousands of crabs have come and gone...

The crab grabbed Megatron around the Antenna, very close to the eyes....I have seen closer encounters before with Maximus actually threading his eyes between a crabs claws, quickly pulling out before they clamped down...

But it would be a very bad thing to intentionally harm the prey prior to placing it in the tank, it goes against everything I am trying to show...

I am organizing a rather risky showdown between my largest stomatopod the Leviathan (L.mac) and a largish octopus, I'm curious to see how the interaction will go down...and it's something I have never seen before.

Here is Nicole bringing it to a Crab :) she ended it much quicker then Megatron did...

Meet the one that set the benchmark for all other spearers to follow....

Quotes on the 3 sumps came back at a total of $855 delivered (more then $100 less ea) and I was assured that they will be made in a very short time period due to their simple design :)...

Well that's it officially! :D

All 3 major incoming goods are now fully paid for and either being made or are actually on their way leaving Monday!

Christmas feels like it's coming early xD!

EDIT: I got $500 left over to spend on bits n pieces like PVC etc. will test out one of my 3000L Eheim pumps to see if it works on the intended return line style and hopefully it can do the job :).

Maximus is getting very old...The G.graphurus is not what he once was...the past 2 live crabs I have offered him 2nd smaller then the 1st lived as he was incapable of bringing them down...something I noted in a pattern of the events were that he would punch himself out by the looks of it...

What I mean is that after the crab enters and Maximus hits it about 1/2 a dozen times, he refuses to strike again, preferring to grapple the still half alive prey and try to rip it apart with his maxillipeds...I know he is old at the very least 6.

Tonight I gave him a crab and again he could not overwhelm it, Minnie beside him was going nuts trying to get the crab through the eggcrate, in the end I felt sorry for Maximus as he was really struggling...so I grabbed the crab placed it into Minnies side, she promptly beat it to death...where by I then pushed her aside took the corpse of the crab and gave it back to Maximus to eat...

I think his hourglass is about to run out ='[

The poor old mutated giant freak of a G.graphurus certainly ain't what he use to be ='[...

My G. Ternatensis is also getting pretty old, too. He's had a long history going through various people in the local saltwater club. He spent years lost in a 250 gallon system, several years in the sump of a 120 gallon tank and I've had him since Oct. 2012. He's a minimum of 6 years old, and probably older. He hasn't molted in over 6 months now, despite being fed daily, often more food than he will fully consume. He just hangs out in the rockwork these days, not doing much of anything. He used to molt ever 2 to 3 months. Ah well, we all get old.

What Maximus couldn't do Minnie did and I caught it all up close and clear/focused High Speed :D only reason I didn't make it into a video is cause I was half way through HIS and got to a point where the music wouldn't match any current footage I had of Maximus (no High Speed hard to record the smaller creatures High Speed, hard to get that clear picture), so I filmed what was in the latest video last night in High Speed of Maximus to fill the video...

I'll make another one later covering his "former glory" :P they are an awesome species to chase after and if I all of a sudden lost all my stomatopod or at least STAND A & B....I wouldn't hesitate filling every compartment in STAND A with G.graphurus :D.

Well lets not wish something like that to happen! :D

Would maximus go after a clam if handed to him? Just thinking of safer alternatives.

I can say what's happening with your maximus is happening to my one current 7" giant O. scyllarus.. I recieved him in very poor condition and he moves around and acks real calm.. his tail is terribly ruffed up, little spots of SR all over his body, and he's missing an antenna.. there is also this really weird white "feather" sticking out the side of one of his pleopods.. I can't seem to find the right momment to catch an image but he doesn't seemed bothered by it and I don't want to injure him touching it..

He'll eat krill, but he won't eat anything that takes effort.. like a clam he'll drag it in.. twap it every hour and than eat it late at night instead of just a chain of hits and eating right away..

I'm finally getting the burrow built and soon I'm planning for him to make a full recovery in a much larger setup.

What is the adverage lifespan of G. Graphurus?

G. grapharus would be on the top of my list of stomatopods to have if they were available in the US.

My biggest concern with my G. Ternatensis right now would be shell rot. 6 months seems like a long time for their shells to hold up. So far so good, but if he goes a lot longer without molting, I'd be surprised if it he didn't develop it. But, I keep him well fed and maintain good water parameters. I was trying to keep the nitrates up around 2ppm for all of the soft corals and LPS, but it's the nitrates are rarely even detectable with my new Elos kit.

I don't want to loose my Stomatopods but seeing as I did get them all around the same time and around similar sizes (smaller smashers) it seems that most are starting to get along...

Rocky...I suspect has died as it has been too long since I have seen him, but he is also max size now slightly smaller then Maximus but easily bigger then Minnie, makes me wonder if females grow slower Minnie has NOT grown much... if I find Rocky as I doubt there will be a corpse, I can measure him and find out how big he was, but I really do think he has died to...

This isn't anything other then bad molts/old age...and when they get old bad molts become the more likely cause of death, the bigger the stomatopod the more risky the molt as to whether it lives or not.

I'm suspect on my fake wall.................

Tintin died...Rocky I think is dead.....Tintin's compartment flows directly into Rockys compartment and they died a little while after adding the fake wall....

Having said that it simply cannot be this...not only is it the exact same materials I used in the past but....Nicole is doing FINE! As you all saw in the latest video shot yesterday, she got the same wall, in the same water, same goes with Megatron who was directly behind Rocky in the chain but now in Tintins compartment and as you all saw....doing fine.

Perplexing to say the least...Hasn't been a good start to the year ='[ however where one dies another will ALWAYS take it's place! :D

As far as Aquarium inhabitants go and for the size, entertainment, interaction, etc that these animals have mixed in with their 5-10yr life span I think makes them just utterly PERFECT for a Display Tank, I fail to see anything better then them even if it means only having them in the tank....still going to be more interesting (in my eyes) then a bunch of fish :X...

I can say that I have had for some reason greater luck with FEMALE individuals rather then males....odd as it seems.

Going through some passings/MIAs

Adam (G.smithii) - Male - M.I.A
Eve (G.smithii) - Female - Alive
Tintin (G.tern) - Male - Dead
Nicole (G.tern) - Female - Alive
Rocky (G.graph) - Male - M.I.A
Maximus (G.graph) - Male - Knocking on Deaths Door
Minnie (G.graph) - Female - Alive
Megatron (G.chira) - Female (yes girl) - Alive

that's just a few in the displays/were in the displays...

All the girls are alive and well...the males are dropping o.O...

If it wasn't for the general saltwater care title I think they'd be extremely popular.. saltwater isn't all that hard to maintain especially consituring stomatopods are one of the easiest/er livestock to keep even in smaller nanos. I find hardier species like my N. wennerae, and I'm saying this first hand experiencing fresh, brackish, and saltwater tanks.. I think him alone is easier to take care of than any goldfish, pond, or freshwater setup I've had combined..

They're underrated... VERY underrated... everytime one is at the lfs all you hear is people yelling EW when they walk past... people don't know what they miss out on.. there's more behind that ugley face than a merciless giant marine crosseyed shrimp. (I actually find them very beautiful.. I honestly can't see the grossness in their appearence at all :hmm2: but then again I adore spiders so who knows :D)

I think saltwater CAN be easier then fresh if it's done correctly and by this I mean very little maintenance on the owners end. It's because we like coral that things start to become more advanced.

I personally think that if a Display Tank were say 100L and it had a 200-300L fully blown out Refugium (all sorts of Algae, DSB & Live Rock), I'd say that is all that display needs and as far as maintenance goes all the owner need to is stock up on CC members and remove macro algae every then again, this kind of setup I see being easier to maintain then most freshwater setups.

I think what Dr.Caldwell spoke of a while ago about Lysiosquillina Maculata and in my opinion Lusiosquillids in general about how tough they are and how they can take damage that most other stomatopods would fall from, is something very note worthy...

Both Morgoth & The Leviathan and even Minos are I would say the most comfortable stomatopods I have, they have shown me NOTHING but advance in their overall health and they look fantastic, Morgoth is so fat -_-...

But even Minos who was on the verge of Death has completely spun about and is now very very healthy, strong coloration, absolutely NO damage upon him from burn/shell rot...

If it turns out that Rocky has indeed past on....once the filtration upgrade is done, I plan on moving Minnie & Maximus into STAND A, they will both get MUCH larger compartments but, they will never see each other.

I will then gut their old halved compartment, make it 1 again (same size as Minos) then get another spearer to fill it, likely/hopefully a P.ciliata, I been chasing one for way too long -_-...
