Nano O Build w/SolarTubes

nice build! did you do the solar tubes yourself? I am getting ready to set up my tank thats the same size minus the width of yours. I want to do 4 solar tubes but wondering about how well they will work and also how hard it will be to install them....any advice?

Thank you :D Both of the Solar tubes were installed by my contractor. I have two left hands  One tube cover about 3 sq ft very nicely. And there are different lens you can put on. I took the len off and it is alot brighter. (like you are outside)

There are couple of concerns I have 1) un-want algea growth, and 2) the yellowish tint of the nature sun light. That is why I am only doing two 14" tubes; and supplement them with 20k MH.

Yellowish Color

Yellowish Color

You ever think of using "theatrical gels"? It is a 3 ml polycarbonate engineered piece of plastic that allows certain peak wavelengths of light through. Here's a link: http://www.rosco.com/us/filters/roscolux.asp#colors . In addition you could create any combination of colors to get the wavelength(s) you want, they will last nearly for ever, are inexpensive, and will act as a filter if the light through the solar tubes is too intense. I've been planning a similar but larger project as yours for some time and have researched this application.

Thanks for the link ;) Looking forward to you project. This one is just dragging on :D

I guess by using Double Blue CTB, I can convert to 10,000K. But, does the 10% transmission rate mean I would loss 90% of the light? Thanks for your help :D

You would have to decide what peak nm(s) you want. There are different "transmittance" values for different gels. Some will have poor transmittance i.e. filter more light to get the color you want (because of the wavelength). Generally darker colors absorb more light and the lighter colors have better transmittance. The suggestion would be to look at the charts and pick the gel(s) combination(s) that peak within the spectrum(s) you want. Man what a vague answer  I guess you can decide by looking at the "spectrum" of the bulb color you want and find the gels that correspond. Either way the par from the solar tubes will far exceed that of any 400 watt halide maybe even closer to 1000W with a 14" solar tube. Remember corals don't get full sun all day and grow like crazy in the wild :eek1:

Looks like I have some homework to do tonight :D Thanks for the suggestion. If this work out, I will do two more tubes and by pass all the lights ;)

My boy did a good job dry fitting the plumbing. Only thing is he use the wrong pump  It look pretty clean, so I just finish gluing it together. Here is a pix of the plumbing:

The ReeFlow Dart is pushing 3600 gph @ zero head. It will do for the time being. I am trying to keep the plumbing as simple as possible. Then load the tank up with Tunzes :D

No... I love it :D I will take some more pix once the other one come in. Stupid credit card company is taking forever.

That is a long driver bro.... Look forward to meet you tomorrow. Are you bringing a truck for your skimmer :D

We drove down to Santa Ana last month in 6 hours. But this time I am going to let my son drive; so stay off the road :D

I think my SUV will be big enough; otherwise one of us will have to sit on the roof rack

The union ball valve looks bigger than the pump  They are great for maintenance; easy to take apart. And so easy to open and close well worth the money :D
